Comment:
I was SO intimidated by reviews, but professor Golub is the most intellectually challenging and interesting professors there is. Readings are confusing, but he does a great job of explaining them and creating conversation. When you write your essay, start EARLY and go to his office hours bc he is super helpful when! 10/10 MUST take 1 of his classes

He's a very nice and interesting guy but I found him to be a rather tough grader. It seemed like the majority of people in the class couldn't get higher than a B+ on an essay. I found this to be a bit discouraging as I was trying my best to write thoughtful essays on the readings. Overall though, if you like philosophy, it's a solid class.

Really boring and full of himself. You won't learn anything but his own philosophy, and you won't do well if you express any opinion other than his. Don't take class with this professor.

Discussion was always slow, boring, and mostly his leading questions. He is egotistical and gets frustrated easily. Personally singles out and picks on students he doesn't like and blames them for his own failings as a professor. You'll get called to his office for doodling in class or looking like you're bored.

Expect there to be one right answer to all questions. I had high hopes for Core 1 coming from a discussion style AP English class. I was quickly disappointed by the very clear bias he had and how his attitude caused many students to not speak. He is clearly very left, which is fine, but his opinions stifle conversation and left many classes silent.

Extremely nice guy! Wanted student participation, and for the readings to actually be done (shocker...). When I made a mistake with a due date for an essay, he gave me an extra week to complete it. His manner can come across as a little arrogant, but he 's super chill. I would definitely take another class with him.

Amazing professor! All of our discussions were interesting and relavant. I don't like the social sciences much, but I loved this class. He also encourages different ways of thinking, even if they conflict with his opinions. Be prepared to work hard, though!

THE most amazing professor at Scripps. In law school now and mostly because of him (although that would make him sad). He changed the way I thought and I live my life completely differently because of his classes. If anyone has a negative comment it is because they didnt put in the work. He will challenge you to your very best. Brilliant man.

Amazing prof, extremely smart and sweet. But for the love of God, NEVER ask him for a rec letter. He is a total flake on that count. Sad, really. He managed to get all our papers back in a timely fashion...

Fabulous. Little reading assigned, which means great class discussions and a deep level of understanding. Papers can be intimidating, but not after you go and talk to him - so go to him BEFORE you hand in our paper. Class discussions are the best, and so is he. You will learn a ton without a high level of stress. TAKE HIM.

An amazing professor. As a grad student now, I still draw on the theories we discussed in his classes. He changed the way I think about the world, systems of power, politics, government, etc. Work hard in his classes-- you won't regret it.

Golub is an amazing teacher, he brings new ideas to the table while teaching theoritical and very hard material. This class, and others I had with him, open my mind both academically and in terms of world understanding.

Golub assigns a lot of reading but at least he puts in a course packet so you don't have to spend a lot on textbooks! The class was very discussion-based which was difficult because we had such a large class, and oftentimes the disucssion took precedence over actual learning the material. He gives awesome study guides before the tests. Golub's cool
