Took the class and was probably the most taxing and work-intensive class I have taken. Really heavy on the book and super fast-paced for an Audio Major. Has an interesting sense of humor, but very accessible outside of class. TL;DR: Accessible but super fast-paced.

Dr. Hooper is a very jovial man, but boy is he scattered. Lectures were incredibly difficult to follow and I ended up learning more from reading the book than what was actually covered in lectures. His tests are rather confusing, and some questions can be extremely difficult to complete in the time limit. know basic java before taking the class.

I graduated from Belmont 4 years ago. Not only did Dr. Hooper's Programming 1 course change my major, it changed my life. There isn't a better professor at Belmont.

He is a great man, very respectful and accessible anytime. The only thing about him is that is very hard to understand him when he teaches, and he skips too fast. Most of the class had no idea what was happening in the class.

Had for FYS. Very eccentric, passionate, and smart... but a computer science prof trying to teach a English Lit/ Honors style class? Rubrics were very hard to understand, and homework was due at 6 AM the day of class (???) instead of by class start. Not the best FYS prof, but worth it. Attend class or you could be lucky with a C-.

This was my favorite class in my college career. We got to make very interesting software for machine learning, games, and a little bit of robotics at the end. He also brought in an interesting guest speaker who gave a talk on doing data analysis in the medical field, using a neural network and doctor notes to predict septic shock. 10/10

Dr. Hooper is a lovely human being. He is kind, caring, and he loves to joke around. If you do all the assignments and take the class seriously, you will learn a decent amount about coding. I would suggest having a basic knowledge about programming before taking the course.

There's issues with the way he structured the course and the readings he assigned that made it not only uninteresting but also frankly a waste of time. He's nice though. Focus on the main projects. Meet with him before your papers are due for feedback so you'll get a better grade. Class participation and homework helps your grade.

Dr. Hooper is a joy to have as a professor, as long as you keep in mind he can be a little scattered-brained. Classes with him are genuinely enjoyable, and you will learn a whole bunch. Be sure to take good notes, because you can used them on the Exams.

The book was clear, which served as a real backbone for the lectures. The class focused on projects to learn the concepts, which I found to be more interesting than grinding through concepts. He very helpful and approachable.

Very weird guy, but really nice. Totally into computers and programming. Do the daily assignments, group work, and you shall pass. Mini-projects throughout and his grading is good. Teaching style is great, a lot of examples and he wants you to get things.

Likable d00d, fun personality. I wasn't really into the FYS topic (artificial life), but it was alright. There were 2 papers, but his grading criteria is very clear. The reading material ranged from very interesting (Dawkins) to entertaining (Atwood) to incomprehensible (Don't even remember) to awful (Gibson).

Dr. Hooper is a very...interesting character. He's nice and the work is relatively easy. However, I have been ill a large part of the semester and he doesn't seem to understand or empathize, thus resulting in my first failing grade... ever. It's not that the class is hard, you just have to be able to do everything HIS way.

Dr. Hooper gives you applets and instructions and you figure them out. He will help you if you really can't figure it out, but thats all. He never stood up and explained things. You had to figure them out on your own. I dreaded going to this class, not because it was to hard, but because I felt like I was wasting time. Easy A though.

Hooper is extrememly witty and funny in class, as long as you pay attention and interact you'll do well. A little scatter brained on what he wants sometimes but his personality made up for it. I recommend him whole heartedly.

You guys taking 1020 and hating on Dr. Hooper were just looking for an easy way out of math. It's not a bunny course, but you really have no excuse to have anything < B. He is one of the finest educators you'll find. If you actually paid attention during class instead of surfing MySpace or Halo cheat sites, maybe you'd know what's going on.

Dr. Hooper is really nice and definately willing to help. If you've never had any programming experience, it will be totally new and probably a little hard. I've had some, and so it made learning this material pretty easy. If you just try, you'll get a good grade. The homework each night got VERY annoying. But he's not that strict with homework.
