Comment:
Put bluntly, this class will be difficult. That being said, it was one of the best classes I have ever taken. Martinez's lectures are amazing and if you pay attention you should be able to understand the material well. Tests are very, very hard, but by going to mentor session and actively doing problem sets you will be fine. Definitely take!

One of my favorite courses at Pomona and inspired me to change my major. He's easy to access outside of class, friendly, and genuinely cares about your success in the class. He makes a ton of jokes about Americans (he's Argentinian) and tries to keep the class light because the workload is real (but rewarding)

Dr. Martínez simply a delight. I would strongly recommend taking as many classes as possible with him. I've heard great things about his Transcriptomics and Genomics course. He brought M&Ms to tests and calls everybody dude. He may not make his class easy and expects you to work, but you will learn and learn to love his teaching style.

Professor Martínez - great professor. He teaches in an engaging manner even though it's a lecture based. Labs are not too bad, and he and the TAs are helpful. Occasional pop quizzes in class, exams are pretty hard (need to study for them quite a bit), but the material is explained well (though he sometimes seems to forget not everyone took AP Bio.

Professor Martinez carries a fun, boisterous attitude that equally attracts and intimidates, but his dedication to his students is undeniable. While his class is indubitably challenging, his slides are meticulous and his explanations are thorough (albeit repetitive). His infectious enthusiasm made learning Biology almost enjoyable- no small feat.

He's not the nicest guy if you are either uninterested or unwilling to learn. I never took AP or IB bio, and while there was a learning curve I managed with putting in about 10 hours a week (In and out of class). If you want an easy GE do not take this class. You probably have to take bio 40 for med and he is simply the best bio 40 professor.

Comment:
Martinez was clearly uninterested in teaching an introductory course. He approached questions in a condescending manner and often did not take them seriously. As a science major, this first semester was discouraging. While he can be funny, most of his humor is disrespectful. I recommend getting the textbook - even when he says you don't need it.

Comment:
Martinez is clearly knowledgable but it is oftentimes difficult to follow his train of thought. His lectures do not correspond at all with the textbook "required" for the class. He is funny but often at the cost of respect from his students.

Prof. Martinez is a really funny individual, but he doesn't enjoy teaching this basic a level of a course. There was also a huge problem with such a wide level of understanding of bio ranging from AP Bio to no bio in their life. The class was really easy for some, too hard for others. All in all it's nothing but a ridiculous GE requirement.

I am taking a human genetics for non majors class and he is teaching it like we are majors. I am completely lost and he clearly has not taken into account that we are non majors. He is funny and may be a good bio prof in general but not good for non majors.

He can be very intimidating, and it is clear he hasn't always read all assinged material. This class is intense and he expects you to have prepared to the absolute best of your ability for each class period, which is completely student-led discussion.
