Comment:

He's an interesting guy. However, he rambles on in lectures about unclear topics from very unclear articles. This made learning difficult. When it came to exams they were terrible and questions related only to random statements he made in lecture. I worked hard on a paper I feel he didn't actually grade. Other than that he's kinda humorous.

I would recommend not taking him...EVER. NOTHING is EVER good enough for him. He contradicts himself, and DOES NOT explain things. Run far away.

Comment:

I enjoyed the lectures and the topics, but the grading was ridiculous. When I was given a C on my final paper, he would not tell me why. He refused to meet in person b/c he had "too much work to do" and would slowly respond to emails leaving me more confused than before. He completely contradicts himself and is VERY disorganized!

I enjoyed the lectures and the topics, but the grades were ridiculous. I took the class w/ friends who skipped class, failed quizzes, barely did the final paper, and still got better grades than me. He does not resolve any situation and refused to meet in his office b/c he has "too much work". He is not willing to help any student, regardless.

Swank has very high standards, but will go above and beyond to encourage and support any of his students willing to work. His class challenged and inspired me, strengthened my critical thinking and made me a better student/scholar. Swank taught me more about research than any graduate level course I've taken in my MA or PhD. He is also funny. :)

This course was the first course I ever cried about. While Swank was quite funny, and relatively easy to talk to outside of class, the papers and exams were impossible. I don't exaggerate when I say you have to get literally everything right and then some in order to receive a passing grade. More than half of our class withdrew from the course.

HORRIBLE. Cusses way too much, every topic lead to sexual innercourse no matter what the subject was. You do not have to read the chapters unless you're doing a critique on it (there's only 2). He leads all class discussions. there is a 12 page interview paper due at the end of the semester. Pretty helpful.

Comment:

Dr. Swank's class taught me a lot about myself. It made me take a stand of my beliefs, and learn to analyze others better. I loved this class, it prepared me for higher classes. Although Swank is a hard professor, he is willing to help those who ask. I would recommend never skipping class. I never missed which is why I earned a decent grade.

Swank could be a good professor however, he is not understanding at all. I make good grades always but still got a B in his class. His tests were insane and nothing you do will ever be good enough!!! Good Luck!

Tests were terriblt i did not do well on them, but the papers i did excellently on. I think research is interesting and is an important subject to understand working in human service of any kind whether it is law enforcement or social work, just remember theres lies damn lies and statistics

Yes, Swank is tough, but more than worth it! Yes, he expects you to attend and to do the work, but he makes himself available, he answers e-mails, and he truly wants his students to learn and succeed. He is clear on what he expects, his class is not a mystery. Take him, he is BRILLIANT, you will know the material when you leave.
