Comment:

There are only two exams, the midterm and the final exam, and any pop quizzes are counted as extra credit. So your grade is reliant on those two things. Don't bother buying the book because he gives you handouts. I'd recommend making a study guide as you go along with the course because he does NOT give you any study guides whatsoever.

Comment:

Professor Florentin is the worst professor I have ever had at FIU. He did a terrible job of transitioning to online classes. When students in the class asked if he could upload the chapters as a pdf his response was "You should have been in class not my fault". I do not know of another teacher at FIU who did not help the students during this time.

Flo is one of the most irritating men you will ever meet. He constantly changes what he says and makes rules mid-semester that are not on the syllabus. He is very knowledgable in the subject that he teaches, however, there is absolutely no organization to his teaching style whatsoever and expects you to have the knowledge of an actual geology major

This professor was so confusing in his grading. He would give pop quizzes every time you had class to make sure you would show up and your grades were made up of your midterm and final plus the points from quizzes. If you can pick a different professor, do so. This class is confusing for no reason.

Comment:

Really outstanding professor who knows what he is teaching and makes the content easy to understand. Students who complain about him are clearly students who dont bother to attend the lectures and fail. Also the class is not hard at all, the content is super easy, you just actually have to make the effort to pay attention in class.

What you need to do to get a good grade in this class is to pay attention, make sure you understand the concept, and write down the main points in his lectures. Then, do the same for the worksheet he hands out every week. Study your notes for 20 minutes before every single class, and you'll do fine in all the quizzes and the midterm.

Never ditch this class and take notes like your life depends on it. Pop quizzes for extra credit (most of the class needed these points just to pass), a midterm and cumulative final. All questions were free response. Extremely picky grader. Dont bother buying the book; just parrot back his exact definition. Nothing more, nothing less.

I took this class to complete my UCC credit and honestly i wanted to die. the only grades are the midterm and the final and he gives pop quizzes as extra credit. He's an extremely picky grader, don't say too much or too little, I passed without the book but i took a A LOT OF NOTES !!!! I hated it. I dreaded it everytime I had to go.

He quite literally expects everyone in the class to be geologists/majoring in geology. When asked how to study for the midterm he told the class to "just know everything from chapters 1-8 and what we lectured about in class". THE EXAMS ARE SHORT RESPONSE ONLY. TEN QUESTIONS. Save yourself. Worst professor I've ever had for undergrad classes.

He doesn't give away a good grade for free. He isn't strict, attendance is not mandatory, and he gives extra-credit quizzes at the end of class. If you get enough points on mid-term and quizzes you don't take the final. The class isn't difficult, but you have to put at least some effort since it's a university course not pre-school party.

A little boring and a pretty tough grader. All quizzes and tests are written response. The entire grade is based on the midterm and final. but he gives extra credit quizzes throughout the semester that end end up totaling an entire midterm worth of extra points. This means that if you go to every class, you essentially guarantee a passing grade.

AMAZING PROFESSOR really loved the class and my major is not even science related. but a lot of people will say not to take him and they are correct if your a lazy unmotivated individual who never shows up to class. if any one is failing his class its because they think college is a joke and should be easy and not a challenge to them at all.

Everything is about class attendance. There are two tests a mid term that makes up 34% of your grade and a final that's 66%. How does he make it easier? Extra credit Pop quizzes. How to study? Go to class, take notes, and READ. Buy the book and read the full chapter. He does not assign HW so go off the syllabus. Professor will miss details in class

He will make you work for your grade. Go to every class! If you miss a class you will be lost. His lectures are long but he tries to make sure you understand the topic. Ask questions if you don't understand. Lots of handouts &study materials. Lots of chances to get an A. If you do good on quizzes &go to every class you don't have to take final.

Class is UCC, I took it as a Earth Science major, it was a bit easy and repetitive. Maurrasse is good but sometimes things get lost in translation. He gives many handouts, and he puts you in teams. Make sure you have a good team, because the extra credit will be easy and a good grade boost. Read the handouts, don't miss a class, email him if sick!

I've take this professor for 3 classes, History of Life, Intro Geology and Oceanography. I recieved an A in every course and never once needed the textbook. He is an amazing teacher if you actually care about the subject. For other reviews saying that he is hard, his tests are 7 questions and you only answer 5 they are all word problems but hehelps

This class combines everything you learned in previous GLY classes while teaching paleontology, sedimentology, and strat. He is very enthusiastic to teach and answer questions. Great sense of humour. You MUST be engaged in the course. Final is 1/2 grade and cumulative. Love the class and Dr. Maurrasse. You become an "Earth doctor/detective".
