Comment:

Professor Powell gives fun prompts weekly. Every now and then there is a big paper, but they aren't too hard. She grades fairly and gives feedback and reasoning for your grade. Instructions are always clear and she answers any questions quite quickly. I believe if you just try and give your best you can ace this class!

Comment:

Prof. Powell is a sweet lady, but her grading is terrible. She would try and read through everyone essays in class giving feedback, but she only skimmed and gave minimal advice every time. She is a really tough grader sometimes, even though her feedback barely had any content. Class was also a waste of time after week 3.

Comment:

Professor Powell was a great choice for Composing Arguments and made me want to actively improve my writing. Even after the course became online only due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the quality, difficulty, and work load remained the same. Definitely would recommend anyone take her for ENG 1010.

Comment:

I personally did not enjoy Gloria's composing arguments class because we never did anything different. It was read, talk to neighbor about reading, and answer questions. Super repetitive and boring. Barely any students showed up to class after a few weeks and I found myself sleeping 15 minutes into class on multiple occasions.

Gloria made her class easy to understand. The worst part about it was she would put us in groups almost every day, and have us do activities in class that didn't count for credit which made you not want to come to class sometimes. Other than that she was great. I loved how she dressed too. There's papers but they weren't difficult or long.

Easy lectures, gives good feedback, and outgoing. Assigns a lot of papers and does many group activities so you get to know everybody in your class. Does get repetitive often like repeating activities and it does get old sometimes

Professor Powell is an awesome teacher. She is easy going and cares about your education. The deadlines are clear in the syllabus and instructions for the papers are posted on Blackboard. However, I strongly recommend renting the RED "Bedford Book of Genres: Guide and Reader" (Not MLA) txtbk and completely object buying or renting "Writing Matters"

Great professor overall. I feel very lucky to have had her as an English professor. She's very clear with her teaching, and very helpful. It's obvious she pays attention to her students, and gives feedback that is both insightful and honest. She's pretty relaxed overall, but you definitely need to do the work. She is always available to help!

This class was definitely difficult, and I took it during the summer. The teacher is a tough grader, and when you ask how you can improve, she isn't helpful whatsoever. Not many tests, but there are a ton of papers due every week.

This was a fantastic class. The entire class was centered around a single final paper (12-15 pages). If you show up and do the relatively simple assignments you will walk away with an A. The course had a ton of departmental stuff stacked into it, but that is to be expected. Gloria was a great instructor and was very helpful.

Ms. Powell is a very sweet lady and she certainly taught me a lot about writing. I learned quite a bit from her and recommend her as a teacher. Yes, she spoke quite a bit about citations, but that is what the course is about. If you want to learn how to be a strong academic writer I take Ms. Powell!

I recommend this teacher if you want to become a strong writer academically. I thank her for my ability to write well structured essays in no time. Many students want an easy class, but I wanted someone to really teach me, not just go easy. If you show up to class and do the work you will get a good grade. She changed my life, and is super caring.
