The worst comm professor at WIU. He is so unorganized and goes so fast during his notes, not like it matters the notes do not help. He assigned a paper and it had nothing to do with what we were learning. No one in my class knew what to do because he hadn't taught us anything. I ended up dropping his class because I never knew what was going on.

Hes very fun to mess with and actually cares about students participating. Very casual way of stimulating class discussion. Material has open applicability. Cool informal dude. Easy A, no attendance grade, just like communication and this guy will like you and aid your success

I've taken him for both argumentation and com theory. He is wonderful! So helpful, funny, informative, knows his stuff. TAKE HIS CLASSES. :) I wish I could take him for more com classes because he's so awesome but i dont want to do rhetoric. You won't regret it! Honestly, argumentation was more fun but hey. Take really good notes in com theory!!

Comment:

I very much enjoyed Rhetorical Criticism with Dr. Lauer. He's an interesting character and a very nice guy. The class makes you think, and be prepared to participate, but it's not hard. Tests are so-so, but he drops the lowest one. Papers and essay questions get good amounts of feedback, which I enjoyed even if grading takes him awhile.

Comment:

Very helpful, but really hard on attendance. It doesn't matter why you miss class a miss is a miss. There is only 300 points in the class, and every miss after 4 is 15 points off. If you talk to him though he is very helpful. there is a lot of reading in the class, but his study guides are extremely helpful for the test. I would recommend him

Students who are looking for blow-off classes shouldn't be in college. However, the ones who actually like being challenges and using critical thinking skills would like Professor Lauer. He likes to force you to ask questions and come to conclusions on your own. That's just called good teaching. He challenges his students!

I took his argumentation class. He purposely made class periods challenging so that by the time you took the test it seemed easy. Tests were still a little difficult, but I think that was more because it was a difficult subject. He is a good teacher who doesn't mind answering questions in the hall if you happen to pass by him.

He will give you two choices, either write 5 papers 2-3 pgs each and no attendence requirment, or participate in class and be graded 2 times in the semester and attendence is mandatory.. i did the paper option and hes a really hard grader! Exams are IMPOSSIABLE! VERY HARD!.hes very very unorganized! and hes kinda weird. i would not recomend this.

He is a horrible teacher..and he didn't like answering any of my questions. I thought that is what teachers are suppposed to do? Teach and help their students when they're having trouble understanding something. DON'T TAKE THIS TEACHER! He probably won't help you either

Mr. Lauer was a great teacher. He is always willing to help. It is one of those classes that if you do the work you will be fine but if you don't you could be in trouble...but probably still get a "C." Mr. Lauer actually wants to get to know his students...I would suggest this class!

I like the guy, but you'd figure in a debate class, you'd actually be debating. He restructured his class so now you listen to dry lectures on how to structure arguments. It's really boring. If you're looking to take Comm 247, you're better off taking Mathison or Miller!
