Comment:

Before this class, I did not think Botany would be very interesting, but Dr. D made it interesting and relevant. His passion for studying plants, especially Hymenocallis coronaria (the Cahaba Lily) preserving our God-given environment are obvious. He is a wonderful teacher not only in imparting knowledge but also in inspiring students. mht SU '88

Comment:

Davenport has been my favorite teacher at Samford so far. He made everything very interesting and he is SO knowledgeable. He covers a lot of material during one lecture, but made me genuinely care about what he was saying because he loves what he teaches. He will talk a lot about his flower (Cahaba Lily)! Love this man & would take again for sure.

Comment:

Dr. Davenport has been my favorite professor yet! He is funny and makes plants the most interesting thing you will learn in college. The class is lecture heavy, so it is important to show up to class and take good notes. His lectures are filled with humor and interesting facts and I was rarely bored. Tests are difficult but doable with studying.

Comment:

Dr. Davenport is amazing. You want to take him even if your major is not biology. He is extremely smart, easy to listen to, and very funny. The class is filled with tons of fun labs and nature walks. His lab tests are really hard, but not impossible. I learned tons, too.

Folks, when I read all these reviews here before taking his class, I'd thought he'd be easy. NOT the case. His exams are very hard, he teaches like he's from the 1980's, no powerpoint, no study aid, nada, all you get is this guy talking for the whole class and drawing on the board. Great guy, but class is tough. Had to balance out these reviews

This guy is probably one of the best professors I have ever had. He puts enough humor into his lectures to make them easy to listen to, and he's passionate about what he teaches. His tests can be difficult because it's hard to know exactly what to study for, but he grades gracefully.

Legitimately my favorite Professor of all time, an absolute legend. Beyond knowledgable in what he teaches yet explains it to newcomers extremely well. Not the easiest class in the world due to the material but he is very willing to help.

Comment:

This man is an angel, but instead of Knocking on Heaven's Door he teaches biology. He was there when the first plant was discovered. He helped heal the first sick pilgrims that came to America through herbs that he himself concocted. But more importantly, he makes a difficult botany class actually interest you and tests you more fairly than any.

Dr. Davenport is one of my favorite professors I have ever had. He is very kind and very funny, you just have to understand his sense of humor at first. He absolutely loves what he teaches and is well respected in his field. His tests are pretty difficult, especially the lab portions. Go to class and pay attention!

If you are looking for the best teacher in the world, you found him. Dr. Davenport knows how to give a great lecture, and tell some really awesome stories. The class is difficult but if you know your notes inside and out, you will get an A!

I absolutely LOVED Davenport as a professor. I did not expect to get into the material as much as I did. But with him as a teacher, I found myself making Botany jokes and talking about fruit types and placentation while in the cafeteria. Great teacher. Very funny. Tests are mostly on the material he speaks on in class so I highly recommend going.

TAKE HIM. Dr. Davenport knows everything about plants, and his passion for the subject is contagious. I had 0 interest in plants & was taking the class bc I had to. It ended up being my favorite! Starts class at 8:15 rather than 8. Lectures are very clear & straightforward. Tests cover a lot, so listen & take good notes. Funniest little man ever!
