Comment:
Dr. Roof is incredibly smart and she is a great person. She definitely has a style when it comes to grading papers so once I met with her and figured out what I was looking for the class was a breeze. Midterm and a final, both easy. She mainly reads off powerpoints and it can get boring, but she's always willing to answer questions.

She is clear on what she expects. She goes through power points every class which can get pretty boring, but the midterm and final are straight off the study guide and the papers and debates are clear.

Dr. Roof is a brilliant professor. She is very knowledgeable in her field, which I appreciated as a poli sci major. Class consists of taking notes during lecture, not much else. If you're into the subject, it won't be bad. Readings are frequent but manageable. She is a tough grader on papers, but an A is not out of reach. She's really funny, too!

I took Dr. Roof's intro to public policy class. It's a difficult class with a lot of reading and great expectations on papers. That being said, Dr. Roof is a really engaging teacher who is always willing to meet with you and help you out and go over essay outlines. Her class has made me a better student. Great prof, hope to have her again.

She is sooo nice. And very knowledgeable. But if you don't know anything about polisci or public policy before taking her fys, and you dont plan to go into those subjects, you will feel overwhelmed like I did. Class is boring. But I did learn alot. She's probably a great professor if you are into public policy or political science.

Very intelligent and nice person. I felt like I learned a lot from this first year seminar. Most of the information was also very interesting. However, some of the content is difficult to understand and can hurt you when writing essays, so not the easiest class. She is a tough grader, but also a fair grader.

While her class is not the most interesting, I definitely feel like I learned a lot. She lectures with a PowerPoint pretty much every class but does allow for some discussion. She's a reasonably fair grader but don't expect an easy A. She assigns a lot of reading and there are multiple essays, but the workload is definitely doable. She's very nice and funny in class and cuts students a break if you miss a reading or need an extension.

shes super nice, and brilliant and so knowledgable about complex, int'l issues; however, dont recommend for FYS. the concepts are too large (healthcare across tons of countries, pensions, welfare, etc - should've been 1), WAY too much reading/night, no discussions, lectures whole time, so u dont do readings then screwed for her hard papers, picky

Roof's style was overwhelming for me. On the first day, she said this class would be discussion based, but very few students talked in my section. Most classes were lectures with powerpoint with way to much information. I spent the entire class frantically trying to write down what she was saying, but it was just too much information to grasp.

Dr. Roof was really nice but had trouble keeping the class discussions going. I learned more in that class about real life than in any other I've taken so far. She is a tough grader and expects a lot out of you on papers but the topics are interesting!

Hard because there is a tremendous amount of reading-looks at both sides of issues. 2 papers and 2 exams- focused and pertinent. Responds promptly to emails. Excellent prof-worthwhile class.

was not interesting didnt know how to guide discussions. Study guide is the exam. She has no idea how to write an exam so literally word vomit it and you will be good. If you can take someone else but not to bad if you are stuck with her.

I really liked her class. Lots of reading, but a lot of people didn't bother. It doesn't really matter if you do or not. The papers aren't based on topics that would require it. The tests aren't bad. Make sure to study the study guides. They're basically the tests. She kept it interesting and was great at helping outside of class. Would recommend

I love Roof...that's pretty much it. Intro American Gov't can be pretty boring since it's pretty much a rehash of high school, but Roof always made class interesting, plus she has a pretty good sense of humor. She doesn't grade easily but she's always willing to help...

had her before she had her PhD - she led some interesting discussions and was very open to having all views represented. her grading expectations were not clear and some of her exam questions were on really minute topics hardly discussed

2 different professors with Roof: 1 is great in class, leads amazing discussions, funny. Then she breaks out the red pen for papers and tests and you are left completely mystified. How can someone so cool in class be so hard a grader? If she's reading this: yes you are a very tough grader!
