Can't say too much since we got an opportunity to do an exhibit at the library so most classes were consumed working on that. He is very funny and cares very much for his students and birds. His love for birds in infectious and you will walk away with a new appreciation for birds. Very fun class!

He really cares about his students. Read a scientific paper and come to class ready to discuss it weekly. Divides class into groups often so you'll have help if you don't understand the paper. Textbook readings were helpful for quizzes. Terrific professor and I took him again the following semester for a different class.

-doesn't teach, goes off topic -Treats lecture as a very shallow group discussion, expects everyone to understand the material from the long readings without him doing anything. -Tests are full of short answers, unclear, and usually have little to do with his "lectures". -overall frustrating and unhelpful -Get ready to teach yourself.

Hoese mostly tests from the book so be prepared to read. He goes off topic in lecture and often puts the class behind, attendance helps a little since he sometimes clarifies some of the harder topics in the book. Overall i'd say read the book and teach yourself since most of the time he's bad at answering questions in office hours.

Although Dr. Hoese is enthusiastic and passionate about the material, he goes off topic far too much and isn't very good at explaining or going into depth. Exams were often different from lectures, SI sessions more helpful than lecture. Do not take this prof unless you don't mind really putting in the hours to teach yourself.

Took bio last semester and definitely was overwhelmed. Goes off-topic and the tests are based solely on the textbook. Nice person, terrible professor. Make sure to study frequently and expect math in every single test. Gives extra credit if you attend SI sessions, which definitely helped me pass the class.

He is not a good teacher. He goes off topic. The exams are short answer. He asks very hard questions that not even SI leaders could figure out. He doesn't teach much and all you learn is from the book. Easy quizzes and homework. The lab will help you pass if you are stuck with Hoese. Try to get 100% in lab. No AP Biology, your dead meat. Good luck.

He gets off topic so much. I like his enthusiasm. Go to his office hours and SI; it will help. Lab is fun if you have good teacher. Two midterm, final, online home work and about 10 quizzes. Lab have lot of work so make sure to chose people that work good in groups.

not the professor for you. He's always off topic, lectures and study guides are no help and doesn't really answer questions if you ask for help. don't take him unless you're planning on learning bio 171 all on your own.

Dr,Hoese is very friendly! The tests are all short answer but that allows for partial credit. The lectures are not very structured, more of a large group discussion than a lecture. Lab is easy and is a big grade booster.

Great professor! Interesting, funny, smart, patience, kind. The format of the class would allow nobody to be a passive learner. Active participation was required and Dr. Hoese set up the classroom culture such that it was honest and engaging.

With all the ratings it seems that he is the professor to take but honestly he sucks. Unless you like writing short essays for all of the exam, Don't take him. My friend said that her TA told her that more than half of the class failed! I have taken AP science classes and almost failed. Got a C+ thankfully. But that should show you how hard he is.

He is good professor and is genuinely interested in what he is teaching but he has a habit of going off topic a lot which causes him to fall behind in lessons. His tests are hard but if you study you should be fine. Go to study sessions. They are very helpful. He is a fun teacher to have and class participation is important in his class.

He makes the class participate in his lectures. But if you raise your hand too many times he will begin to ignore you so other people will have a shot. His exams can be a bit tough but if you study, you will be fine. He really enjoys lecturing since he often acts like a child (which is good because he shows how much he enjoys teaching).

Very tough class. Lots and Lots of work. I studied all the time, and tried very hard in this class and I got D's on both of his test. He doesn't curve, even when the class average was a 50% on the exam. Lab will keep you more busy then lecture. I don't know how people passed his class. It was extremely hard, and he was not helpful at all.

Hoese is amazing. If you read at least key points in the chapters you will do fine in lecture. PAY ATTENTION!!! In a lecture of 250 its easy to get distracted. Sit in the front and participate and you will ace the exams. DONT BE LATE OR MISS LAB! EVER!!! huge points off on your lab notebooks.. i had to learn the hard way :( go to SI- its free help!

Really fun in class and his tests are very straightforward. As long as you show up and do the work and try you will get the grade you earned. When you ask him questions he asks you questions which requires you to THINK!!! That's the whole point of going to school is to think not get answers form teachers and repeat them on tests.

he is the same guy as bill hoese. his class id=s hard but is a great example of what professors should be like. he lectures the whole time & he makes u find out the answer to ur question by yourself. make sure that u READ the book and attend SI. oh and get an easy lab TA or u r screwed.
