Comment:
Cate-Arries' HISP208 class is extremely challenging, you go from grammar fundamentals to writing papers and reading novels in Spanish. That being said, I did not realize it was possible for my Spanish to improve so much in such a short time. Cate-Arries is a difficult professor, but the class is worth it, you will learn a ton.

Cate-Arries class is tough, be prepared to put in a lot of work outside of class and come to class ready to participate. This class has a lot of homework/ papers/ mandatory events outside of class. You will learn a lot and I would recommend if your Spanish skills are very strong going in and you are ready to put in many hours of work every week.

Super nice and caring! Expected to be intimidated/scared by my first college Spanish course, but Prof. Cate-Arries was super accommodating and helpful to different levels of Spanish dependent on high school skills. Having class at 8 am was rough, but Cate-Arries made sure to stay upbeat & high energy.

Very passionate about what she teaches. Speaks Spanish in a way that is easy to understand. Assigns immense amounts of homework but is a fair grader (also means no curves). Cares very much about students; it is likely that you will make a personal relationship even if you never take another course with her. Verbal class participation is mandatory.

Awesome professor and you will learn a lot from her. She won't be an easy A, so if you're looking to be spoon fed, keep looking. But if you're looking to expand your horizons and really learn something, then you've found your woman. The things she teaches will actually be retained, as long as you put in your work. She'll definitely put in hers.

Loved Prof. Cate Arries. An incredibly nice person and always encouraged her students to participate with her positive attitude and never putting anyone down when they mess up. Reasonable amount of work and she is willing to help if you need it. Great life experience in Spain with cool stories. Enjoyed class thoroughly.

Cate-Arries is not an easy A. You have to work really hard, but if she gives you praise on something, you know she means it. She's a brilliant scholar who manages to still be down to earth, something that's sometimes hard to find here. If you pay attention, participate, and ask for help if you need it you'll get a lot out of any class with her.

I hated Literary Criticism with Prof Cate Arries. Not only does she switch from English to Spanish constantly--very confusing--but she treats students in this class like children. She wrote a 3 page explanation about how to write a 3 page essay. I would like to be taken seriously by a college professor and Cate-Arries did not do that.

By far the most challenging Hispanic Studies professor at the College, but I never regret taking a class with her. Her classes are a lot of work, but I always come out learning a lot.

Extremely demanding in terms of work, time investment, and expectations. She is very knowledgeable and a good teacher, but I felt the amount of work required was excessive for a Spanish 102 course. Compositions, literature, cultural readings, workbook exercises, etc. all in addition to the textbook material/exercises in a 4 week class. Demasiado

She loves what she teaches and does her best to make class challenging but enjoyable. She has fairly high but clear expectations. You'll read a wide range of literature, and she encourages discussion and expects class participation. She's a mom - cares about her students, firm, reasonable, understanding and helpful but not too easy. Good prof!

You learn a lot, but the class is difficult. Mimic her interpretations of the readings from her lectures in your essays and you'll do fine.

Really great professor. She knows her stuff and she knows how to teach. Very involved at the College. Super friendly and helpful, but not a pushover. Class was challenging but effective - learned so much so quickly, became much better at spanish. Pretty difficult but worth it, if interested in literature take the class!

Comment:
assigns way too much work that's not relevant to the course/material. class material doesn't reflect tests. does not have a sense of appropriate or manageable course load. unnecessarily hard grader. More focus on papers and how well you write/support a thesis than Spanish language(pprs every week).
