Comment:
Bard prides itself in small, seminar classes with student participation. Professor Shkliarevsky's class was the antithesis of this. And do not consider questioning his authority or you will be publicly humiliated. He has a way of shutting down a student when they question anything he says. Dogmatic and pompous. Worst teacher I've had at Bard.

Gennady is difficult to appreciate. He's tangential, tends to ramble, and isn't always clear or concise in his points, but beneath all of that he's obviously an immensely intelligent person. I wouldn't take him again because he doesn't encourage debate, and has a lot more interest in his own theories than anyone else's. Still, a decent professor.

Gennady is an incredibly intelligent man. He pushes his students to have strong and unique opinions in class and in papers that they can back up and support. He does tend to talk a lot during lectures, but I was usually very interested in what he had to say. Overall, a great class that I learned a lot from. Also, read the books (or at least part)!

This lecture class was interesting but hard for me to remain focused and the lack of student participation made it very boring sometimes.

Gennady is the most intelligent man I know. He's simply amazing. Not everyone will like him, but if you like him you'll soon find yourself worshiping him. He teaches the subject, and so much more- analyzes psychology of societies, discusses conflicts with agency, etc etc. So much knowledge ripe for the taking from him.

Gennady is one of my favorite professors that I have had at Bard, however it took me some time to truly appreciate what he does. I feel that too often students forget that they are students, and feel that classtime is reserved for them spouting whatever they want. You must accept that he is teaching and guiding you. agenvy and the construction of k

He's alright. I would recommend taking him only if you are really interested in the material. His lectures can be a bit boring, and his discussions seem to have trouble going far, he ALWAYS says "what do you think of this?" rather than guiding the discussion.

Brilliant guy, magnificent texts that I read even 5 years later. A Bard treasure--careful with this guy, he's great enough at what he does to make you a Russian History Major! Read the assigned readings--they're so excellent! Eastern Euro History, of a couple courses I took w/ 'Shklee', is the most necessary for all 'complete' Bard educations

Willing to talk with you at any time, but he spends most the class trying to get you to believe his theories instead of offering options for you to decide. Also tons of reading from boring out of date sources

Gennady is the reason I started studying Russian at Bard. He's a bit muddled in terms of explaining his thought process, but if you tune your ear to him, you'll see he is a poetic, intensely interesting guy. Class discussions are frustrating and fabulous; I used to leave class wanting to tap dance.

I feel like I should have gotten more from this class. The textbook and the lectures were pretty dry though the other readings were interesting. He knows what he's talking about and is very invested in it, I just found it hard to get into with him.

Gennady brings a breadth of expereince and relevance to his classes. I know first hand that he is remarkably patient. He is very open to new interpertations. he has helped to cultivate my passion for history that i retain and use. I graduated in 1988.
