Professor Lykins' passion is clearly in ceramics. I've taken both Throwing and Handbuilding, and highly recommend anyone with even a curiosity about ceramics to take either course. The workload is EXTREMELY intense, but not out of the range of one's capabilities. Just know ahead of time that you will spend much of your life in that ceramics room.

I took the throwing clay class and I loved it!!! You do spend most of the time out of class making your work, but you learn so much! I made so much progress over the semester and I LOVE throwing clay now.. He is a funny and nice teacher, he does have favorites but he is easy to be around. If you love dogs he brings his to work everyday!

I took the throwing clay class and I thought it was a blast. The only negative is that you spend outside of class time to make your pots. I spent over 10 hours a week outside of class. The plus is that you make a lot of birthday presents! Overall I had a lot of fun in the class even though it takes up a lot of time. He gets off track alot though.

This class really needs to have a pre-requisite. We were given homework with photoshop, which is what the book taught, but then expected to work our assignments in illustrator. He tries to explain it in lectures but I was so lost I dropped the class. The 1st assignment took over 15 hours to complete. Don't take this if you already a full class load

I threw clay on a potters wheel for about four years before taking this class and the techniques I learned while taking it helped me out so much- my throwing technique improved so much. He was also very helpful when you knew something was wrong with your throwing but you weren't able to fully figure it out. I'd take the class over if I could.

I actually got an ulcer while taking this class because of the stress! My advice: If you value your health and sanity, NEVER take one of this man's classes.

Least helpful teacher of the faculty at Berry, beginning ceramics was WAAY too involved for an intro level class.

Comment:
This class was just ridiculous. Lykins has no sympathy for the fact that some people are not natural artists and simply take the class wanting to learn more about the art form of ceramics. Everyone is graded on their talent rather than effort and improvement. I spent over 40 hours a week (out of class) on my projects and still made a C.

This class was Hell on earth. I had to take it for my major. Otherwise I would have dropped it after the first week. The work load was so hevay that I nearly failed all my other classes attempting to finish my urns and pinch pots for a man who would never be pleased with them.

Knows his material and is more than willing to help students who ask for assistance, but on the other hand... he doesn't seem to realize that some students are slower to pick up skills than others. Prepare to work 12+ hrs outside of class.

Talk about a nervous breakdown!! This guy piles so much work on you that there's no way you could possibly get it all done if you're taking any other class. All the webdesign stuff is way too unnecessary, as well, but Lykins is a nice guy outside of clas

This class almost gave me a nervous breakdown. Completely unstructured and you're not sure what's expected of you until it's too late. Lykins is very helpful though. If you have a problem, he'll do whatever is necessary to get it fixed.

most worthless class ive ever taken. he doesnt know the material, you have to teach it all to yourself. totally unclear on assignments and subjective grading is sure to land you a crappy grade. i was failing and didnt know it until the day of the final.

Generally happy guy, very helpful. Pretty vague or flexible on due dates, depending on how you look at it. Very easy to get off subject, pretty clear on expectations of work but not on clear on how your work is graded. Less structure, more independent.

Extremely nice and helpful. Has given me more knowledge about Web Design than I ever expected. His standing assignments are slightly vague and haunt you the whole semester. Very random about what happens in class and makes up do dates randomly.
