This was one of the most interactive and interesting classes I have taken. You MUST do the reading assignments as students take turns to be the discussion leader or turn in a paper based on the reading assignments almost every week. Very personable professor.

This was not the "Intro to Comparative Politics" class that I had imagined. McKean is extremely knowledgeable, but does not seem to relate well to be able to transfer that knowledge to her students. LOTS of reading. The only saving grace of this class was the discussions one day a week where the TAs tried to clarify the rest of the week.

This semester has been chaotic - and it's hardly over (as of this writing). Course design is uninteligible. Countless revisions to syllabus throughout term (aka "thinnings"). People have lost interest in keeping up with readings. Midterm questions were unreal. Lack of organization is beyond anything I've experienced at Duke (I'm a senior).

Best professor I've had at Duke. Great enthusiasm in what she teaches, brings tears to your eyes. A lot of reading but its worth it. Grading policy is messed up.

Interesting lectures, very enthusiastic lady. But seriously, what kind of professor can't finish grading the second midterm by LDOC?

Best professor i have had a duke. She has very high expectations, gives a lot of work, and her lectures are very fast-paced, but you learn a lot and she is REALLY interested in the subject and always willing to meet with you for extra help or just to chat.

Amazing class, amazing professor. A bit frazzled sometimes, and definitely way too much reading, but you learn to skim after the first few weeks. My section was actually great, very interesting discussions. Very accessible out of class, a really interesting, eclectic, caring, brllliant woman who really cares/knows what she's talking about.

She isn't the most organized person, but I didn't really mind that. I thought the class was great and if you figure out what she wants on the papers, you can get ridiculously high grades on them. I'm really not that good at poli sci, but once I figured out her grading it was really easy.

She definitely loves what she teaches but she gives an unnecessary amount of reading and the lectures are rarely helpful. She'll give a 3 page question for a 4 page essay. If you only wear Burks and you love hugging trees this class is for you, otherwise there are much better political science classes.

Exams were poorly written and section was horrenduous. No one wants to read upwards of 150pgs a week of the same, boring material. She doensn't project her voice so basically you have to sit upfront if you want to hear anything, and mostly that is just ramblings right from printed-out notes.

This class sucked. I had high expectations, but was unpleasantly suprised by the hundreds of pages of reading and unclear expectations. She runs through information in class just reading off of notes. Grading was not standardized and exams were poorly designed and feedback was poor.

Ridiculously intelligent. An expert on global environmental policy. Her lectures are enriching, clarifying, fast-paced, and accomodating to questions--but at times this can come at the expense of organization. Helpful, funny, and enthusiastic. A great professor.

TONS of work, esp because there is a (potential) quiz on every reading assignment, and a seminar paper every week. but mckean is a wonderful professor and makes the subject very accessible and interesting. no in-class exams, which relieved some stress, but still ridiculous take-home midterm/final

very enthusiastic and passionate professor, this class had a lot more reading than I expected, but she makes it quite possible to do well, even though I didn't end up loving the subject, she made it more than bearable, and the class was nicely structured so that you cover a lot during the semester!
