Comment:
Your "typical" philsophy professor. You can tell he genuinely loves existentialism and his enthusiasm is inspiring. I was already fascinated by the subject, and he made it approachable and more meaningful than I could have hoped! Beyond the facts, a lot of reflection on your part is required, not only to do well but to gain the most. ps I got an A

certainly not the best phil prof @ Frdhm. Lectures are dull & mildly informative. gave 2 rather patronizing 'writing' assignments he called essays in which he marked everyone DOWN for citing sources outside the text and not underlining topic sentences! very silly. likes to hear his lectures get regurgitated more than indiv. perspectives.

Comment:
As a lecturer, Westphal is terrific. He's great at giving practical implications to certain philosophical thoughts, which is helpful in understanding the material. As a grader, he is quite arbitrary and very tough. Take him if you want to learn. Getting an A is a different task all together.

A man of great ideas, and interested in making the class easier for his students. Easily available for office hours, medium-to-light workload, etc. My only critique is the lack of depth in discussion of the material. By 'discussion,' I mean 'lecture' - very minimal class participation, though if one really wants it, the office is the place to be.

Fair grader, medium workload, but pretty boring (even for a philosophy major like myself).

What a great professor! Super nice, very fair and really intelligent as well. It's refreshing to have a professor who knows the subject he teaches thorougly. He really wants you to understand the material and explains everything very clearly. The readings he assigns are not too long and there's only 2 papers on easy topics, midterm and a final.

He's very nice, sometimes lightly boring, reiterates same corny jokes year after year, but is very smart and knows the material thoroughly, so you can't really go wrong.

Talks a lot in class. Makes you write brief entries in a "philosophy journal"...write in it, it'll save you time later.
