Loved the class. He obviously loves the subject he teaches and it shows in his lectures. All i can say is read the text!!! if you do the readings and listen to the lectures and take good notes, you should be fine.

I really enjoyed his class, the reading and lectures were interesting but it was very hard to study for this class because he didn't post lectures. Other than that I loved his passion for the subject, there are a lot of required books (our class had 3) and rather than make for a boring weekend I really enjoyed them! Tests were easy.

This class is pretty straightforward. There is a lot of reading sometimes but if you just skim it you will be fine. Dr. Batalden's lectures are pretty boring but the work for this class is not too difficult

It doesn't seem like there is ever a lesson plan. He never stays on track and then will never get back to his original point. We read a 400 pg book in a week as well as many others. If you can handle monotone rambling and a ton of reading, go for it. If not find someone else quick!!

Dr. Batalden is extremely knowledgeable and very willing to help his students. Those that complained seemed to put little effort forth. Reading-intensive class! If you are not prepared to read 7 books for a course don't sign up for it.

Make sure #1 when you are writing his essays that you be VERY specific about the points he asks you to make, do not use generalizations and then use examples, but not quotes from the text. If he gets flustered he starts muttering and stuttering and it is really funny, and he has funny movements.

great prof if you are a serious student. i got an A- in his russian empire course by doing absolutely all of the reading and reviewing class notes--do not skip lecture and expect to do well. tests are really long and fairly difficult. be prepared to both memorize dates/people as well as be able to really analyze and interpret historical events.

His reading assignments were interesting, and his lectures were good. He docked me for presenting an alternative interpretation of the final novel/autobiography. I got a C on that paper because I disagreed with him and it brought my grade down.

Worst micromanager I've ever seen. Also, since he is a workaholic he thinks everyone else should. Total nut.

I took both his Russian Empire and Eastern Europe in Transition class. The workload is pretty heavy and the tests are hard, but you will learn a lot of interesting stuff. If you show effort in class, he will like you. Also, he's been around forever, so he has lots of connections and can help you out a lot if you are interested in his field.

One of the most difficult and rewarding courses I took at ASU. I was a business major and took this course because it interested me. Stephen Batalden is very sharp and expects a solid commitment from his students. The workload is tough, but well worth it.

I have had a lot of history teachers at ASU and Batalden, by far has been the teacher that has drove me the most insane of any teacher I have had. After having his class, I swear to god he has no clue on reality and live high on the ivory tower

He truly cares about his students' future, and he is passionate about the subjects he teaches. He is an absolute workaholic, who sometimes fails to understand that not everyone wants to work 95 hours a week, but his mentorship is not an opportunity to be missed if you are intersested in Russian/East European Studies

Very helpful professor who will do anything for his students. He works hard and is very serious about his job. Reading load is heavy, but papers are not too difficult. Most of the material is very good. Tests are average.
