Comment:
Overall I'd say about average - though I did talk to other students (who were basically coming from the left) who said that, due to their disagreement with his beliefs alone, they were going to sabotage his ratings here. Sad, really. He's smart enough that if you aren't prepared he can be hard to follow but he's always willing to help.

Comment:
He presented an analysis of the sub-prime lending crisis without once mentioning private securitization. His free-market fundamentalist approach ignored the role of private securitization and instead he blames it on Fannie Mae. This is ludicrous because they wrote less that 5% of all sub-prime loans. You can hear it on podcast on iTunes. Shocking.

Comment:
Confusing, unbelievably boring lectures, & just general disinterest in the subject matter, Thayer Watkins receives the honor of the worst professor I've ever had, and I know that most of my classmates feel the same. This isn't retaliation either - I did receive an A. All-around disappointment of a class, really does show the disadvantage of tenure.

This guy is really smart, I can see how many students can't relate ;^) I enjoyed his lectures and took lots of notes, good thing because his online tests included much of the lecture content. There were perhaps 13 online tests (anywhere from 5-10 questions) all openbook, and one paper. With little effort you can get an A in this class.

As others have said, a prime example of why tenure is such a fundamentally bad idea (econ all about incentives, right?). Possibly the worst professor I've ever had. He doesn't care and doesn't try. He just shows up and rambles aimlessly. Even the online tests are badly designed. Don't bother showing up, but do get in a study group.

Comment:
He did not teach with any intent to make anyone learn. He rambled for about 20 minutes and proceeded to take a break to put on meaningless videos every class period. All tests and quizzes are done online however there is no text just his website which is as useful as his videos. Overall poor teacher who didn't seem to care about being there at all.

Good lecturer, knowledgable about many things besides economics. But he does not answer phone calls or emails and otherwise seems not to care about teaching.

A great example of why tenure should be abolished; Watkins is unresponsive and disengaged but still gets paid for showing up. Uses videos to fill up class time so he doesn't have to lecture.

Obviously tenured and lost interest in teaching long ago. Unorganized and actively avoids student questions. Tests are online, so easy to cheat by having one person take them and pass on answers to rest of class. However, it's not really cheating as there are no rules about sharing exam answers. I got an A without sharing, so you don't need it.

I was interested in the course before taking it. However, he killed my interest. He was not clear regarding his expectations. He did not cover the entire course material listed. He seemed disinterested in teaching the class. I was not satisfied at all.
