Energetic, huge ego, large classes. Would recommend taking other science classes that have more practical benefit than this one.

my goodness, what an incredible professor! what an incredible class! definitely intimidated when he said we would have three ten page papers due throughout the whole semester but they are so easy to write. it's just your opinion with some quotes. my favorite favorite FAVORITE class ever. i don't know if it'll be offered anymore but it was incredibl

Provine has a great reputation and it is well-deserved. Lectures are interesting and entertaining. I was nervous about the science requirement and this ended up being my favorite class. Provine got me thinking in a whole new way. He is one of the best of the best.

I thought Dr. P. was great when I took his evolution course, but his seminar in free will blew my mind. Because of this course, I had the most epiphany of my life, regarding the way I view myself, others, and society. If you have the opportunity to take this course, do so. You will be a better person for it.

Loopy guy, but really sweet. Lectures have very little to do with reading/section, and there are no exams, just papers. A real expert on his topic, and incredibly devoted to evolution as a concept. Gave me an interesting new perspective and worldview. Perhaps we have no free will...

he's an evolution teacher, of course he's an athiest. if you can't stand athiesm then take another course. extremely helpful and incredibly knowlegeable..he talked to me for two hours in his office hours about random stuff related to my research paper.

I stopped going to lectures a couple weeks in and still got a good grade. The essays seem hard, and the ten-page req seems daunting, but if you don't leave it to the last minute you'll be fine. Only sections are req.

To make an understatement, Dr. P is remarkable. Lectures are thought-provoking, and the small discussion groups are a blast. Readings and papers are challenging but rewarding. By far one of the best classes I've taken at Cornell; I highly recommend it.

Comment:
The lectures (not required) & sections (req) are at times thought provoking. Dr. Provine is clearly passionate about the subject, though biased. Grades are based on 3 equally weighted essays; 2 out of 3 of the essay topics assigned were extremely obscure. Grading was fair. Papers were far more work than they were worth. Do S/U option or don't take.

Lectures energetic and interesting, although not really required because exams are based only on papers and entirely up to the discretion of the TA. Pretty hostile to religion, a bit close-minded, but definitely makes you think.

Don't ever take this class! Ignore the comments on the bottom! The lectures are interesting sometimes, but they do not pertain to the assignments at all! Sometimes, it pertains to the readings... Moreover, the paper topics are very obfuscating. The TAs grading are very subjective as well (not really that lenient in my opinion!). TAKE OTHER SCIENC

Dr. Provine can make a boring subject like pigeons seem like the most exciting concept ever. I loved his musical power points, and he was always very helpful when I asked him a question. This was one of the best courses I've taken at Cornell. Of course, having a TA who was an easy grader and VERY lax on deadlines helped too.

This is a great class. Provine is so energetic and so fascinated with evolution. He makes you want to learn all about evolution. I love going to his lectures. I really love the class mainly because of him. Warning: this guy is a preaching athiests and is obviously *very* bias against christians, religion, and intelligent design.

I graduated in 1995, and even back then Dr. Provine was packing them in. His class was interesting and he was always ready to answer questions. The class is a little big, so he won't know you unless you ask questions.

A really nice and funny prof who knows his material well, not afraid to offer his opinions on controversial subjects, grading depends heavily on your TA, grading is subjective since it's based on essays, course requires a lot of work and effort
