Probably one of the best professors at CCSF in the English department. She honestly cares so much about her students and just wants her students to pass and succeed. Definitely reach out to her if you feel stuck! She can help you get back on track :) Classes were remotely online though, so it made classes a little harder than usual.

She was a hard teacher, meaning the work was really tough and the grading was harsh. Expect a lot of work! I learned a lot and definitely improved my writing. Its not easy to earn an A. Some of her constructive criticism and suggestion can sound ignorant and unaffected. Its a good class but Im sure theyre are easier classes.

Alisa is an outstanding teacher and a truly caring, genuine person. Not only does she help you improve your writing and develop a style, she also shows how writing can be a very powerful tool to create social change. The workload is heavy, but very rewarding. I am a better writer and a better person because of her class.

Alisa is an amazing instructor and a great person. Her classes are engaging, funny, and interesting! She wants you to think beyond the surface which is VERY refreshing and will give you a lot of useful tips to achieve your goals during the semester. If you have a hard time speaking out, this class might be uncomfortable for you. I recommend it!

Amazing course! Lots of work to do but it is so helpful in crafting you into a better reader and writer, the text book was only James Baldwins Collected Essays and some other books that were optional and available to rent. She is amazing! I wish I did better in her class, but she helped me so much!

Professor Messer is a force to be reckoned with, or a force with which to be reckoned. She does give homework, but the homework I got was in the form of making drawings. There were a couple of group projects which were challenging. She had as her text book, Baldwin Collected Essays. She's opinionated but makes one think critically.

She wants you to succeed and really seems to care for her students. I would take her class over and over again because she really inspired me!

Messer gives really good feedback on your essays and there are not a whole lot of essays. For ENG 1A, there are a total of 4 writing projects mainly focusing on rhetorical devices and James Baldwin's books. There are chances of improving your essay to get a better grade after you receive back your essays as well. Overall, really understanding.

Ms. Messer is a very strong teacher. She found the right approach to everyone. And at CCSF we have all kind of difficult folks... I liked the material that we used for studying, and the subjects that we discussed or made projects about. She is fair in terms of grades. You basically get what you worked for.

Comment:
Ms Messer is extremely biased.I think especially in an English class, the collaboration of different opinions is what makes it more thought provoking and influential. But with Ms messer, she is big on her own opinion and if you think otherwise, you're simply wrong. She is also big on attendance, and TONS of homework. Please reconsider professors.

A challenging and thought provoking class where diversity is celebrated. She is serious about teaching so put effort into this class! As long as she sees you trying your best and being open minded it will be ok. Not to mention she is an extremely kind person who is supportive and understanding, as well as overall awesome. I'd take her class again:)

It is a difficult, but very helpful class. She has a different way of teaching, We even had a presentation. She is approachable, AND enthusiastic. The reading, and the assignments are very interesting and fun. You have to work hard to get an A! Even a ESL student can get an A, I got an A :)

She can be beachy about attendance in the first few weeks. So DO NOT miss her class or she will drop you with no mercy. However, she's reasonable on grading and flexible on deadlines. BUT don't think she will not deduct points if you try to turn in late every time. Overall, I recommend her 8/10. You'll learn something as long as you put in efforts.
