I appreciate the professor. He picks out good topics for discussion. However, this class is honestly absurd. The work required is more than any class you will take at UMass. The readings are endless. If you thought skimming would be enough, no. There are quizzes every week on readings, where I had many 0s despite paragraphs of answering questions.

I thought it would be relatively easy and interesting for my last semester. I was wrong. I had to put more effort and time into this class than all five of my other classes combined. The grading was absolutely ridiculous and there was no office hours so you could see what you got wrong. Save your mental health and do not enroll in this class.

This class is an easy A. Discussion section is based on completion and quizzes are fairly simple you can read the textbook while taking it bc its just 3 questions and the TA is lenient with grading. The lectures are dense but its asynchronous so i divide it day by day. Exams are fairly easy with 48 hour window. He is super nice as well.

Comment:
Prof Le's classes are very lecture heavy so if you're not interested, don't take it. The video lectures are far too many and too boring to watch. He does, however, provide a fully asynchronous learning model so that might be a plus. Otherwise, super average class. The readings are especially tedious and there is little/no flexibility provided.

Every week there is a 25 slide lecture, a discussion, a quiz, an hour long documentary, and at least six textbook readings. During the last week there is also a 2400 word essay in addition to whats listed above. I have more work in this class than all of my STEM classes combined... and I'm a STEM major. Good luck.

Professor Le is so far one of my favorites. You can tell he genuinely is passionate about the subject he teaches and he knows what he's talking about. He's pretty lecture heavy but provides you with the materials you need to pass. He really cares that his students do well and he is very accessible when you need extra help. He's kind & understanding

I liked Professor Le's classes (I took SOC240 and 262 with him) because you genuinely don't have to pay that much close attention to his lectures. You can half listen and do other work each day, so long as you prepare well by the textbook for his exam questions (which he prepares for you ahead of time), you'll be fine!

Took Soc 106, 240, and this class with him. He shows a lot of pretty good movies often. He's kind of awkward but if you get to know him, he's actually funny and very kind. He clearly loves his field and puts a lot into motivating students to be interested and pursue more. The only con is he never gives feedback on tests/papers

Grading is based on points with attendance/participation, a group activity, 3 exams, 10 short analysis essays on readings, and a final project. Writing, discussion, and participation is involved, and books are highly suggested ( needed for exams, readings, and projects). Don't bother to take the class if you are not interested in the subject.

Prof. Le leads a very lecture-based class. The units rotate between lecture film discussion, and it's very easy to follow along. His lectures are very clear, but the class gets boring (even though it is easy). The textbook is necessary for the tests, but you do not have to read it aside from that.

Almost impossible to come back from a bad exam grade so I disagree with his grading. Movies every other class helped a ton though.

The lectures can be boring and long but every other class is a movie so it isn't terrible. He assigns a lot of reading but there are online quizzes so you don't really need to read until you do the quiz. You need to take very good notes because he does not post them online, so attendance is extremely important.

Comment:
Taking this course, I didn't expect the format of the text to be as it was so I ended up getting a D. Worst problem ever because with C.N. Le.'s grading, it's pretty much impossible to come back from. Once you get a bad exam grade, although there are two other exams, a final paper, and weekly reading quizzes, there is practically no way to get an A

I took this class for a U.S. Diversity credit. I would only recommend this class if you NEED the credit and there are no other professors available. The class is boring and seems to ignore important aspects of certain issues. It's boring and mind numbing. The best aspect of the class was that he showed movies every other class.

The class is kind of boring and tests can be hard if you don't study, but all in all not a bad class. You only need the textbook for online quizzes which are extremely easy. Lectures can be boring, but he shows lots of movies. He seems aloof, but he is actually a nice guy and helpful with time management.

Awesome professor. Class meets 3 times a week, one day is a lecture, one day is a movie, and one day is the discussion of the movie. You have to attend 3 external lectures and write a 4 page paper but he's a good grader. Learn a lot not only about Asian Americans. I was one of a few non-asians and it was still good class. Don't miss class at all.

BEST CLASS/PROFESSOR EVER! He was so interesting, I loved the way he taught with movies, lectures, and discussions. I can honestly say I've never learned more, loved a class or a professor more. He's so helpful and actually WANTS you to succeed. If you just go to class and read then you'll do really well! I would advise everyone to take his class!

Great Class! 5 sessions 2 weeks per topic. First weeK: 15 minute lecture, then a video ( always extremely relevant and very interesting), lastly an open class discussion. 2nd week: 1-hour guest lecturer and 2nd part of the class group presentations. Work:1 journal entry per session, 1 presentation 1 final project. You're going to learn so much!!!!!
