She is a very understanding professor, her work is just a lot and extremely hard. You really have to put your time and effort into the class and all the work she gives in order to pass.

Comment:

Break down: she is very knowledgeable and knows exactly what she is talking about; from her experience. Does not use the textbook but prefers to read ahead. Gives a bunch of extra credit. Exams are extremely tough. Lectures heavy, handwriting is awful. She is a sweet woman, and I appreciated her a lot but shes tough. Coming from an A+ student.

Comment:

Very thorough and knowledgeable teacher. If you're willing to pay attention during Prof. McGurk's classes and read the assigned textbook chapters (reading one chapter ahead is recommended), you will learn a great amount of material from her class. A good amount of extra credit assignments are given to help raise grades as well.

The worst. Her lectures are crammed with info and she speaks as if you are expected to already have known general biology information and terms. Acts as if everyone is medical students. Condescending when asked ?'s. Terrible notes. Doesn't tell you what chapters she is on or where she is teaching from. Irrelevant study guide. Hard test&labs

She is VERY tough. If you show her youre willing to learn she will help you but biology in general is a very hard subject. There is A LOT of material to cover so its very overwhelming. She doesnt give a lot of tests so its kind of a struggle to keep a good test average. She does give extra credit

She knows her stuff but lectures are very hard to follow, she covers so much in one class (I had a once a week 2 1/2 hr). Once you think you got the first part of a subject down shes already finishing up another. Very difficult, you need to do a lot of studying and reading. Often difficult to take notes. Her exams are all around 100 questions.

The worst teacher I ever had in my entire life! She thinks she is teaching medical students. Exams are ridiculously difficult and the study guides were no help at all. Do not take her class, she will make you hate biology and make you feel miserable.

McGurk's class is tough as nails but if you show a clear interest and willingness to work, she will go out of her way to help you understand the material. This class isn't for the faint of heart but you WILL know the fundamentals of Biology walking out of it. Get ready to work hard and learn a ton.

Comment:

Professor McGurk is extremely intelligent, and always willing to work with you if you're having trouble. Her tests are hard, as is the class, but she knows exactly what she's talking about. For an introductory bio course, it's definitely intensive. However, after taking this class, you will be at an advantage for further biology or science courses.

Horrible teacher. She is very knowledgeable of biology, but unless you are a biologist you will not be able to follow. Does not explain labs. Grades horribly and tough. Tests might as well be finals, and you do not learn the material in class. Hardest class I've ever taken and its supposed to be intro. Try to get another teacher.

Mrs. McGurk is an amazing professor! Extensive bio knowledge and always has interesting stories that relate to the material. Her notes are thorough, writing them down will help you ace this class, and she will always give extra explanation if necessary so don't be afraid to ask questions! Her excitement about Bio is contagious! Gives Extra Credit

Terrible. Drop her class. She does not teach and her tests are impossible. Study guides do not help, lecture is confusing and her notes are all over the place. Unless you have the time to teach yourself the subject, do not take her class.

Extremely knowledgeable & you are instructed day 1 of how content heavy the course is! Offers a great amount of EXTRA CREDIT-def take advantage! Caring of students & truly does want you to succeed, BUT you need to do your part, too, in order to earn an A. Tests were challenging & covered large amount of material, but an A is possible!

Do not take this class unless you're up for a serious challenge. Whenever its time for students to do a lab, she gives no instructions whatsoever, leaving the class to figure it out on their own. She also loves to pile too many chapters onto one test and throws in topics that she never discussed in class. Do not buy the textbook, you won't use it.

Good professor but tough subject. She gives you all the info you need and ample time to review material with her as a class and ask questions before a test. Gives 3 tests. She recommends dropping the class of you fail the first one. Passing is achievable, you just have to work hard for it. Gives ample extra credit.

Teaches a lot of information, and has a lot of lab work. Overall enjoyable class and a very good teacher. If you plan on taking many bio classes i would highly suggest her. The class is no easy A but, it is manageable and you will get a lot out of the class.

Comment:

I read the reviews for professor Mcgurk before taking her class and as you all can see, they aren't good. I have NO idea why. Her tests are long but read the material and ask her questions and you'll be fine. She wants you to learn! She is willing to explain anything and answer your questions, you just have to ask. I enjoyed her class!!!
