Have taken multiple classes from him during remote learning and he is so organized and clear with his expectations. Many teachers are struggling to teach remotely right now but he has everything dialed and it makes for a stress free remote learning experience. He chooses amazing and moving material that you will actually want to read and engage wit

This has been my worst experience in a Spanish class here at UCSC. Had 12+ assignments due MWF @ 12pm. Had to wait 2 weeks to gain access to VHL + made me make up all those 160+ assignments. Assigned a book that's WAY too hard for our level + at least 25+ questions for each chapter. Gave us a TIMED ORAL + WRITTEN FINAL. DONT take online if u can!!

Comment:

12+ assignments on VHL due every MWF AT 12PM, which was awful and took very long, too reliant on online material. in class activities were useless. Had to read 13 chapters of a book entirely in intermediate Spanish that was way too difficult, assigns 30+ questions for each ch, and then expects you to memorize the content for the TIMED oral final.

Comment:

Ariel is a great guy and a good professor, but the class is soooo hard, and it's only hard for the sake of being hard, not for educational maturity. He's there for help when you need it, but there's too much reliance on online material. The assignments he creates are very helpful, the the midterms and final are super difficult.

I had this professor for SPHS 5 and 6. Although there is a lot of readings and homework i really enjoyed the class. The professor made sure everyone participated and he gave good feedback on how to fix our homework. He's also funny and has a good attitude. Definitely i would take one of his classes again.

This was my first spanish class and Ariel made it super easy. I started to fall behind and I just kept going to office hours and kept getting more advice from him until I was confident in the material. Great guy!!

He gives you all the tools to learn Spanish and helps you a lot. Only 1-2 very short writing pieces. Lectures are fine-good, he's friendly and can be funny. Homework is usually online/in book, not lots, 45 minutes max per class usually. Read one short book during the quarter. Practice tests (2 midterms, final) are very similar to tests.

Good teacher, kind hearted, however his tests are pretty difficult. Make sure you study, don't take the class for granted, if you study then you're chillen. If you have difficulty in the course and can't make his office hours he's more than willing to schedule a time with you so you understand the material. Workload was definitely reasonable.

Really nice guy, understanding about how hard it can be to learn another language. If I got another chance to take a Spanish class with him, I probably would take it. My only qualm would be that he's not too good at explaining grammar, but you could probably just talk to him during office hours if you're REALLY confused.

Oh if you are a Spanish Speaker that has taken previous classes in Spanish, this class is going to be a bore. Also if you have not had much instruction in Spanish and have not read too much in the language, there is no transition between reading materials, giving you headaches. A lot of busy work too. Interesting guy though and hilarious:)

Professor Perez was fantastic, as a professor and as a person! Firstly, his class is informative, interesting, interactive and enjoyable. Secondly, he has a genuine interest in the students (very nice and approachable) and a delightful witty, irreverent sense of humour. I loved Spanish 4 and hope to have him again!

Perez has been one of my favorite professors at UCSC so far. He's really nice and has a great sense of humor, which combined with his accent, makes him utterly adorable. His website is very helpful, and he makes himself available at office hours. He also finds engaging videos/movies or music to tie in with the material. Take any class with him!
