Hochberg is the best professor I've had. He's funny, critical, and helpful. Not to mention he always wears his special fishing vest. He's a good professor if you don't want to be babysat when you write. He also lets class out early most times.

Comment:

A smart and witty professor, but not the right fit for a required first year course. He grades way to harshly and the conferences have always got the same result: shorten the paper, you could have said this in 2 pages, not four. This coming from a man who gives out boring essays that do exactly what he wants us not to...

Comment:

The most insightful, brilliant professor I've had thusfar. He make even the most boring lit seem interesting and relevant. Rarely gives out A's, but I wouldn't consider him unfair either. Overall, don't miss his class or you miss an amazing opportunity to think deeply about new topics... and see whatever crazy outfit he decides to wear that day.

Dr. Hochberg's influence on my writing has stood the test of over (sigh) fifteen years. Mediocre students had trouble with him back then too. It's good to know he's still bringing out the vitriol in complacent students. I've never learned more about writing than I did in his fiction writing class, and my husband and I still break out the old Story

What exactly does he look for in a paper? Ha, like any of his students know! Conferences are worthless. He sits and reads the papers and just makes a face like its the worst thing he had ever read. Then tells you to fix it. Helpful? no. Classes are dreadfully boring too.

Hochberg is a tough teacher, and his grading system is probably arbitrary. But the guy is smart-- he can make any piece of fiction fascinating, and he's witty, too. I still can't tell you what he wants to see in an essay, but his classes are never boring.

Hey may be witty, but he doesn't teach or empower students. Worst of all: I'VE RECEIVED THE SAME GRADE IN EVERYTHING I'VE EVER TURNED IN. There is no way you can tell me that's coincidence. Perhaps he ought either retire or put effort into his classes.

Dr. Hochberg's lecture-style teaching format is a turn-off to a lot of students, but I prefer it to the classroom environment encouraged by most other lit professors - a bunch of underclassmen yacking ceaselessly about what they "think."

I did not like CWS with him. With conferences I did not find him very helpful in my papers because I would fix what he told me too and I would still not get a good grade. He may be smart, but I do no think he is a good professor.
