Comment:
Took Wilder for Existentialism spring term before he retired. The class itself was pretty basic, read and discuss. Since everything is based on opinion and philosophy, while reading French works from WWII, it was sometimes a very dull class. Tough grader on papers too. Wilder was a great teacher though, sad that he retired.

Loved prof wilder! his tests are all short answers but you have the option of chosing 4 out of the 6 with one essay at the end. He's so extremely helpful and you can easily get an A on the paper if you let him proof read it. All of his notes are on webct so no need to buy the book. Great guy and very passionate!

Professor Wilder is the best professor I've ever had! He loves what he does and it shines through everyday he teaches. College of Charleston is losing an asset in Dr. Wilder. Thank you Dr. Wilder for getting me interested in Philosophy!

There were about 10 criteria on the rubris, so I don't think a "C" was an appropriate grade. However, when I asked him about it he said that there were no specific point values attached to the rubric. I guess that means he just pulls grade out of a hat then. Whatever! Anyway, another thing about Wilder that I don't really care for is that a...

I am typically a straight A student so when I got a B (midterm grade--class still in progress) in in his PHIL 115 I was not too happy. Prof. Wilder's grading policy is very inconsistent. I got a "C" on the first paper (first time I ever got below a "B" on a paper, btw). Yet, when I looked at the rubric he only counted off for two items...

The class is far too large and although the material is crystal clear he takes so much pride in creating tricky test questions that do not represent an understanding of the material, ornery old man is the best description I can give, there are plenty of other great humanities classes you can take so I would recommend going with another option!

Dr.Wilder is an amazing professor. He is always helpful and wants to know his students. He is so easy to talk to about missing class. He goes off student honesty and will excuse you from class and quizzes if you have a legitimate reason. He presents things in a way that is very easy to understand, and tests/quizzes follow the notes and reading.

Dr. Wilder is a dedicated and energetic prof, but BEWARE! Lectures and tests (and textbook)have a definite politically liberal and religiously agnostic slant. One test actually made us complete a "logic" sequence that Pres. Bush lied about WMDs. How about Clinton's lies and other liberal hypocrisy?? Keep politics out of the classroom, CofC profs!

Dr. Wilder is a great teacher, and explains the ideas of critical thinking very clearly through lectures and class discussion. The tests are very easy and the quizzes all follow the same basic format. The two papers are the hardest assignments but only because Dr. Wilder is strict on grading papers.

Besides being a world class swimmer, Wilder is a world class professor. His Critical Thinking Class makes you look at how think in a different perspective. He is also not afraid to talk about topics that are controversial, and loves playing devil's advocate.

WILDER IS AMAZING! One of the very best professors at CofC hands down. Very sweet man, presents material in a very straighforward manner with lots of examples. Be prepared to have class discussions and disputes. Grades consist of a midterm, final, 4 two page papers and 1 four page paper. I would love to take him again. OUTSTANDING PROFESSOR!!!

Critical Thinking- Great course and Dr. Wilder makes it even better. He is a very laid back kind of guy. Very smart and very well prepared. You have to go to the classes or you wont know what to do on the tests. Lots of quizes make the tests not so bad. Liked it so much I signed up for another class.
