Comment:
During covid he has been less than absent. His 'lecture notes' consist of one page per week. All of his TAs do the work in his class: marking, answering questions. The class doesn't have any discussions which is ridiculous considering it's English literature. For the entire YEAR long course there are FOUR zoom calls. Cannot recommend him less.

Only cares about his students when they're doing their work, and they're doing well. Have a personal issue or fall behind? He doesn't care - find a better ENGL prof!

Comment:
Robert May's lectures are one of the most boring things you will ever experience. He talks so much without actually saying anything. The way he speaks indicates that he believes he is THE BEST prof at Queen's. The TA'S are all looking for entirely different things, and are IMPOSSIBLE to please. They also all think they are the best.

Comment:
Dr. May presented very abstract and opinionated ideas on the very boring reading list. The TAs were impossible to please and would provide useless suggestions like expand on this although the essay character limit was only 1000 words. Tough class to do well in unless you are an English major, and very challenging to sit through the long lectures

Comment:
Dr. May is pretentious, difficult to work with and unfair. He will administer quizzes on days when attendance is noticeably low and will doc marks on assignments for no reason. If you want to learn about English the way it should be taught, want to be rewarded for your hard work, and want to read interesting material, don't take any of his courses.

Dr. May is one of those profs that don't want their students to be successful. He would assign pop quizzes on days when attendance was low and after TAs had marked essays, he would doc 6-10 extra marks off. Even if you attend class and contribute to discussions, he will give you a 3/10 for participation. He thinks he's sick.

Overall, I would say that Dr. May is a very good professor. He is very knowledgable about English literature and his way of analyzing texts is very impressive. Reading is critical in this course as if you don't read all of the texts you are in tough for the final exam. Also, participate in his symposiums!!! They will help you!!!

Comment:
As a prof there was a huge disconnect between what he knew and what he could teach. He was very defensive about his opinions and when things were suggested in class discussion that were not in agreement, he would shut them down and pretty much end discussion. (He also ONLY took attendance on days when he noticed that many people were missing).

Straightforward English PHD kind of dude. You can say anything and point to one quote from the story and he'll go with it. Keeps bringing out his PHD thesis that modern literature is about an inability to connect. Thinks he's the bomb when he's pretty decent. Not too much work if you can rock essays, if not, GPA's will take a hit.

It's true. People who think that 20-century literature is "nauseating," who wish only to soak up "information" rather than learn, and who desire only to protect their "GPA" should avoid Dr. May's ENGL 160 and stick to their Life Science courses.

The most awful course I've ever taken; the prof had deep insights into the nauseating reading list, but was completely useless in terms of giving actual instructions or info. Writing the essays was like fighting lions blindfolded using plastic cutlery. GPA destroyer - unless you're an English major, avoid May and anything he teaches at all costs.

Got better as the course progressed. Could have used time more effiecently however; material was often only able tp be covered superficially. But, any prof who says 'we can all go have a few beers and watch the color purple' is good in my book.

He's a pretty normal dude. If you read "Lucky Jim" in class, you may notice a slight resemblance between May and the main character.

Very interesting, funny, passionate about his material. However, sometimes he seemed more intent on speaking his own point of view and presenting his own interpretations on material than allowing for healthy class discussion. I shared a lot of his views on the novels, but there were a couple of girls (especially) that he almost ignored sometimes.

A really down-to-earth professor who uses humour in his material and lectures. Enjoyed his lectures and enjoyed talking to him during his office hours about life in general.

dr. may's method of lecturing..using powerpoint, was really helpful; however, i found that he would speak VERY fast so you really need to jot down stuff quickly. also, it didn't seem that he encouraged a lot of in class discussion. Essays: a fair marker...
