He assigns journal articles to read (instead of a textbook) every night and quizzes on each article (again, pretty much every night before class). His exams are a series of essays. He is genuinely terrible at giving directions (they are always vague, and you have to essentially read his mind to get it right). He seems to be a disorganized mess.

He can be a little disorganized, but overall he really cares about his students and will go out of his way to help. Lectures are interesting and very discussion based, and labs are very hands-on. Read all the articles he assigns, pay attention in class, and do your best to participate and you will do fine.

Dr. Andersen cares a lot about the subject and wants you to get it...but good luck. He acts like it's simple to do good on a test, but rarely EVER gives out A's. Some questions on his tests are present research problems...for an intro class, that's a little too much. Learned a bit, but harder than it needs to be.

Dr. Andersen is a very difficult teacher, so if you are looking for an easy A... this isn't the class. However if you put the work needed into the class, he will bend over backwards to help you. He's opinionated and sometimes biased , but he really knows his stuff. I really enjoyed his class and I learned A LOT.

Andersen doesn't help out his students very much at all. He's confusing, expects lots of work, and is never around when you need him. Probably because he's too busy "being department chair".

Dr. Andersen really knows his stuff but can ramble sometimes. He also can be very biased (don't ever mention if you are a part of the greek system) and moody. He's very passionate about what he teaches and is always happy to talk about current events and how they connect to the material being covered. SUPER LONG ESSAY TEST and LOTS of reading!!!

Dr. Andersen gives you IMPOSSIBLE amounts of work!!! Numerous times he had to give us extra time to finish our (supposed to be) THREE-HOUR-LONG tests. Expect a LOT of work in labs, as well as reading. However, he only pushes you so far because he cares about your success. If you are very driven, take him. But if this is for a GER, STAY AWAY.

Quite a difficult professor; lots of lecture, pretty high-level readings, and tests consist of seven open-article essays. However, he doesn't require a textbook, and he provides some essay questions before the tests. Not an easy A by any means, but do the work, participate in class, and keep up with your readings and a B is definitely attainable.

Great teacher! Tests are extremely long (3 hrs) but if you've read the papers you'll be fine. Papers are very hard to read, but they become easier as the course goes along. He's good at explaining the info and is always willing to help.

WARNING: you will read inches and inches of technical, tough, lengthy scientific articles in lieu of a txtbook. I had more reading for this class than all my other 3 combined. Only take if you're passionate about EES or have the scientific understanding equivalent to a Ph.D. Tries to help when you get bogged down--if you ask the right questions.

Avoid like the plague. Left-wing liberal that literally preaches the world is ending and we will be living in villages in 40 years. I can't believe Furman lets this guy teach - I talked to a geologist after taking this class and found out all I was "learning" was debunked propaganda from extremely biased sources. Very hard, 3 hour-long tests.

DO NOT TAKE UNLESS YOU WANT TO MAJOR IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE. Extraordinarily difficult grader with open-book, 3-hour long tests. You will read well over 2 inches worth of science magazine articles that are incredibly boring and technical. However, he will bend over backwards to help you - very interested in your success. Nice guy, great teacher.

Came off sabbatical and started doing these POGIL (Process-oriented guided inquiry learning) worksheets you have to do in teams every day...but overall a great class, he's hard, but you'll at least get something out of it. Study the graphs in the book!
