Comment:
Dr. Stagg might be knowledgeable of his topic, however, he is incredibly unclear of what he wants in assignments and tests, as well as he grades toughly. For someone who doesn't teach very well and doesn't deliver at his very best, he has very high expectations and doesn't seem to know how to really grade. Save your money, don't take the class.

Lectures are extremely dull and he reads off the slides. He is an unpredictable marker and doesn't provide any feedback on assignments or exams. Would not recommend taking his courses.

He seems like a really good prof at first but that is prt of his trap, he is an insanely arbitrary grader and will not give you feedback if anything is submitted online, very boring and brutal person. This prof is 100% guaranteed to be awful! If you take this class... well you arnt getting that money back.

Nice guy, great content but clearly has taught the course dozens of times. I agree with other posters, harsh grader for sure because he is specific with what he wants, go to class because theres a lack of info on slides. Requires a solid amount of library/archive research for essay. Breakdown is readings/seminars, midterm, essay/plan, exam.

Awful. Seems calm and laid back, but it's just because he doesn't care if you learn. He's there to hear himself talk first, and teach you second. Very hard marker who doesn't make at all clear what he wants from his students. Rambling lecturer. Next-to-useless slides and materials. Doesn't tell you what he wants you to look for in the readings.

I loved Dr. Stagg and learned a lot from his course. Attendance is not marked, but you won't do well if you don't go to lectures (and he warns you of this many times at the beginning of the semester). He is a difficult marker but your success in the course will really fall on you and your work ethic. Don't bother if you skip class or hate essays.

Dr. Stagg is a friendly professor but he is a hard marker. His grading criteria for tests aren't clear because he just writes a mark on it without no feedback or comments. His lectures aren't heavy with a lot of information about the history of Toronto. He doesn't provide details for the exam review. I wasted money and time taking this course.

I enjoy his lectures and appreciate his willingness to help with assignments if you take the time to go to his office hours, but I agree with the other commentors in saying that he is rather harsh when it comes to marking.

Wanted to elaborate on the comment posted below this. The TA was new, and often deviated away from the tutorial goals and questions. I wasn't happy about this either. However, the TA will be changed for next semester. I also find this comment quite critical of someone who either, (a. did not attend lecture, or (b. did not try on their final essay.

worst professor I've had and probably will ever have at Ryerson. Unorganized. Unintelligible lecture slides, course outline and especially grading. Boring to boot. Horrible TA that spoke during 75% of the PARTICIPAITION based seminars. No clear direction in themes of the course. I didn't learn anything important in depth. Just all around AVOID AAC

Ron is a decent guy, and enjoys teaching. However, he needs to give better criteria on how he is grading. Whilst I received an A- on my paper, there were no indications on what he expected. He is a hard grader and is often very broad in what he wants. For example, I asked him how long our essay answers should be on the final, and he didn't know.

It's misleading. When you first show up he seems like a nice calm guy and answers your questions clearly and everything, but when you get any work or tests back WHAM! He's the hardest marker I've ever seen in university. Avoid him at all costs.

He was very kind and approachable, but he marked outrageously hard on the midterms & exam. I get that a prof should have standards and not give too much slack to students, but he was far beyond this. If I hadn't been so busy the next semester I absolutely would've appealed these marks, which I had never before considered doing for other classes.

I do not recommend taking this class to anyone. Lectures are long. Professor jumps from thought to thought, and there are no real lecture notes or slides that help clarify. EXTREMELY tough marker on the essay questions section of his midterm and final (this is coming from an English major). Save your GPA - don't take this class.

I absolutely DO NOT recommend this class. Stagg has horrible lecture notes, and speaks much to quickly in class for you to catch up with him . Furthermore, his grading is extremely subjective. His exam questions are so broad, that you must try to focus your argument, but if that's not the argument he is looking for, be ready to fail.

Genuinely a nice guy who is really bright. He loves the content, so it's easy to learn from him. He handed out candy during the exam. I don't know why some people didn't come to class--it was always enjoyable and he gave a break every hour.

I genuinely took this class because I thought it would be interesting but I really f*cked myself on my GPA. Attending class is optional since he is so boring that you can barely absorb anything he is saying. There is a buttload of reading. Overall he is a really nice guy and I've come to his office hours more than once. Course isn't worth it though

I don't understand the hate for Stagg! He's such a sweet man, a quirky, history-nerd sense of humour, and he takes time to know students personally! He's a hard marker? I got nothing but A's with him and he's very clear on what he wants and is always willing to help out as much as needed. Stagg is amazing, take his class, you won't regret it!
