It was an interesting class that really got me more into classical music as well as I learned a lot about Canada's music history. Didn't go to class but just put an honest effort in my assignments and tests and did pretty well. Easy class that teaches you something interesting in an engaging way.

Comment:

Professor Bell is one of the best music profs I've had. He's a bit intimidating at first, but he's actually really nice and very willing to answer questions. He does give a lot of homework- his assignments are pretty time consuming- but he's not a terribly hard grader. I really enjoyed his lectures and I'd definitely take a class with him again.

Dr. Bell was the most inspirational professor that I have ever had. He is deep and profound, providing the most insightful knowledge about not only music, but also about life in general. He is sharp as a whip. There is never a dull moment in his class. I am forever grateful for the knowledge that I have gained from his lectures.

Awesome class. Easy marking and assignments. Professor Bell is overly fair and always gives the benefit to the student. Class is very interesting, but you need to go to learn how to listen to music. Super fun class and the Prof is amazing.

Allan seems like a really nice person and is extremely knowledgable. However, if you are in more than one of his courses in the same semester be prepared to want to die. The work-load for his courses are way above average and the assignments and quizzes are extremely difficult. Warning: you may start hating music instead of loving it.

While this course is not an easy A (it's not a GPA-booster), the prof is simply amazing. I really took a keen interest in this course, thanks in large part to the prof's enthusiasm and help outside of class hours. I would highly recommend taking music with prof Bell

The material was daunting at first (I could not hear the beat or subdivision of the music), but he provides a lot of practice and examples during lectures, which really helped me! He doesn't really post notes online, but his lectures are very entertaining. He is super funny, and I enjoyed his class a lot.

Allan is a great prof. I'm a finance major, and took this course with no idea what to expect. Allan made it enjoyable to go to class and spend a considerable amount of time studying for tests and working on assignments. I have ZERO experience in music, but I finished this course with an increased passion for music. Also, the TA Di Wu was awesome

Comment:

This is one of my favourite classes that I took in university. Professor Bell is extremely enthusiastic about Opera, and really wants his students to gain an appreciation for it instead of worrying about tests. I wish everyone could take a class from him, but he is retiring at the end of this year.

Undoubtedly the most knowledgeable professor I've ever had. Although he's extremely intimidating at first (think Professor Snape mixed with Dr. House), he becomes extremely approachable as soon as you talk to him, and he's more than willing to help you with anything, whether it's related to his course or not. As long as you try, he'll help you out.

Comment:

Initially a frightening teacher, especially if you're easily intimidated. However, he will not give up on you. If you go for help, he will patiently explain the subject over and over again until you understand. This is a difficult course and the midterm is brutal, but hand in your homework in early and with the extra grade bonus, you will pass.

Completely eye opening class. I went into this just expecting it to be another dull option, but came out with a completely different perspective on music. Allan truly is inspiring, and such a genuinely good person. He has an outstanding musical mind, and brings so much passion to the topics. Highly recommended.

Fantastic prof, super nice and helpful. Very intelligent and humorous. Thanks for a wonderful class! TA Sarah was also very wonderful! I haven't had a single TA I haven't hated, except for Sarah. Very understanding and kind! A definite rarity for TA :)

Professor Bell is one of the best professors at the University of Calgary. I am in my fourth year, and I have never experienced a class like his before. He has so much passion for what he's teaching, it's incredibly inspiring. I recommend this class to anyone who truly wants to learn about music, and who's willing to put in the work for it.
