Comment:
There is a course kit and a few short story collections for this class, his lectures are not only focused on the historical background of the texts irrelevantly, he does a great job connecting themes and important concepts from the text and how the background information is relevant to such. he will actually dissect the important quotes.

Comment:
One of the worst professors at York. He makes a first year general elective course into a nightmare by assigning a (lengthy) novel each week, in addition to course kit readings and dedicating his lectures solely to irrelevant background info. He also seems to be on a power trip and quite psychologically unstable. Avoid his lectures/tutorials!!!!!!

He is not a good professor. He did nothing but talk about how much he hates Donald Trump rather then focus on lecture material. I will be reporting him to Obudson due to this. He also seems to be very mentally unstable. He threw a girl out because he phone rang.

His lectures are pretty useless, they're pretty much the background of the works that you'll be reading throughout the semester. Not really necessary to have a good understanding of the novels. Gradesaver and Sparknotes helps big time.

You must attend his lectures. His lectures are still interesting though, just make sure to take notes. He also HATES it when phones go off in class. If your phone goes off, he will kick you out. If he's the one grading your papers, be careful with your grammar because he's very picky. Take into consideration, he has a website called Grammarman.

First off, do not go to the lecture. What a hilarious waste of time. Nothing presented in lecture will ever be tested. Glad I figured that out early. Just Sparknotes or Shmoop every single book and you'll be absolutely fine. Easy participation marks in tutorial.

he's a nice guy, but expects your grammar to be perfect. incredibly hard marker, lecture material isn't even apart of the exam, and does not clearly explain readings. he focuses way too much on the history and background of the text, rather than the text itself.

Not very concise despite asking for his papers to be as much. He rarely gives valuable feedback and expects his grammar corrections to be suffice. If you do not participate in his class, he seems less likely to help you. He goes into far too much detail about history rather than the readings and how these two connect. Would not recommend.

Good prof! Very knowledgeable and thorough. His reading selection was excellent. He has a dry sense of humour. If you have him for tutorial, make sure you go. Go to his office hours, he's helpful. He's a very hard marker.

I can't comment on professor Weiss as a marker and as a TA, but as a lecturer, he is one of York's absolute best. His knowledge of and enthusiasm for his subject matter makes EN 3172 a very enjoyable course. While his choice of TAs leaves something to be desired, Weiss himself seems like a good guy, and he's hilarious to boot.

I had this professor for both Canadian Fic. and Apoc. Sci Fi. He is knowledgeable in both subject and makes learning the material very interesting. While he is a hard marker he is also funny and a great professor.

Very interesting to listen. Gives a lot of background information which is important to understanding the time-frames of the novels and their significance in that period.

What an amazing professor. I had 0 interest in Can Lit, but I loved this course. He seems a bit cranky at first but he's very understanding and kind if you approach him. Lots of readings, and I actually liked most of them. Crystal clear, engaging, funny, great prof. (NO CELLPHONES, seriously)

Weiss is a smart, funny man who knows Can. Lit. as well as anyone. He can talk like an encyclopedia on the subject. If you take this course you will leave it with much to take to other courses. The T.A., Melissa Dalgleish, was temperamental but she is one smart lady who has alot to help you with. Good luck to all (Nothing personal Melissa).

Comment:
It was an excellent survey of the major authors and literary movements in Canada. I loved the multifaceted approach to the texts that foregrounded the intellectual and political currents operative in the texts. The lectures were dense and clear and provoked thought when applied to course essays. The lectures complimented the essays and exams well
