People either seem to do really well or really badly in this class. I am not planning to be a music major and at first, I thought the class was stupid, but he was actually a wonderful professor and I listen to music much more differently now. I wish people would take this class more seriously.

Tells personal stories about working w/ famous composers like philip glass and john cage. basically that's what class is,-him telling stories about the musical works we listen to, other half is listening to them. only complaint: the 2 TAs this fall weren't helpful, it was extremely hard to study for the exams b/c they weren't clear about the conten

He's a famous musician, so his insights into the genre are illuminating. His quizzes are fairly tough: make sure to listen to the pieces to study. There's only one book: read it. The music is like nothing you've ever heard. The final project is one of the most fun compositions you'll encounter: swing a sock over your head and you've got a sonata.

Important composer is somewhat flighty and seems to grovel at students occasionally. His work is difficult and high-concept, which is reflected in the way he editorializes subject material and his expectations for student compositions. Still an enlightening class. Be prepared for rote memorization

Intro to Experimental Music: Alvin Lucier is a well-known experimental composer who can tell personal stories about John Cage and others, which is what really makes the class so, so great. He is really spacey, though, which could be a problem is he's your advisor or you need individual help.

Simple, straightforward. A little unclear at times, but otherwise great.
