Yes, He is tough! with that said he is also fair. Put in the effort , show up in his office for question and think outside the box. he is cynical and will be hard on you, he will yell, laugh and make jokes on students but don't let that fool you. He cares so much about his students and it is just a matter of approaching him. He is super inspiring.

Dr. Decken is incredibly sarcastic, which often comes off as condenscending. His expectations for first year lab are incredibly high, and his mere prescence within the lab is stressful. Be prepared to get yelled at, he will probably find a way to make you feel stupid at least once during lab.

Decken is not one for the weak. If your not ready to put in genuine effort get ready to crash and burn. His lab style punishes lazy students and cheaters. Expects you to show up prepared and alert. due to him I was able to recognize my mistakes in previous labs and correct them for future labs. All around straight shooter, would take again.

I absolutely love Decken as a prof. He does have a sarcastic sense of humor, which offends some people. He is extremely helpful in the lab if you are unsure about certain things. He does crack the whip, but he tells you what he expects of you as soon as you start the course and if you are having trouble then he is approachable outside of lab hours.

Although many people are scared of him well known whistling, I quite enjoyed his labs and teaching. Once he gets to know you and you get used to his humour he is actually quite funny and helpful. Other than the limited time to finish your lab AND your lab report (three hours) it was an enjoyable course!

Horrible chem lab instructor. Treats the students like crap and makes them all feel worthless. You MUST stick up for yourself and fight back or else he will keep harassing you. Swears at the students and makes you wonder who the hell pissed in his cereal and why he takes out his anger on others.

Dr. Decken is a sarcastic, condescending and downright disrespectful lab instructor. He is a great upper year lab instructor as those qualitys encourage hard work in the self motivated but make him an absolutley terrible first year lab instructor. Prepare to be made fun of, buried in prelab work, and stressed beyond belief. Also he hates eng kids

I had Dr. Decken for Inorganic Lab I, and although he makes you work extremely hard, you definitely learn a lot. He is extremely sarcastic and sometimes comes across as a bit of a bully, which can make it hard to seek help. However, if you can deal with him, going to see him for help will help you a lot in this course.

Awesome prof. I've never learned so much in one class before. A lot of people complain about the amount of work, but just read the references for each lab and go and talk to him whenever! Seriously, he is happy to answer your questions at any time. My favourite prof by far, really inspired me to stay in chemistry.

Pre-labs suck! Get a group together and do them together...don't be afraid to ask him for help, he'll give it, he may make fun of you but your grade is worth it. He's super funny and a great teacher but if your not good at laughing at yourself or beinging the butt of the joke..you may want to reconsider. Planning on working in a research TAKE THIS!

I had him for CHEM1012 and CHEM 1017. Decken is great. He is witty, and sarcastic, some people take it the wrong way, but you can tell he is good natured. You have to do your work, as long as you prepare you're fine. He isn't condescending like people say, he is actually very approachable and helpful.

A lot of people are scared of Dr. Decken and think he's too harsh/scary, but I think he's hilarious. He's definatly very sarcastic, but if you get his humour you like him. He was a little scary and intimidating during the lab, but it was effective in getting the important points across. Really helpful as an advisor too, wants you to do well.

Professor Decken is not as bad as many students make him out to be. He can be intimidating at first, but his expectations are not ridiculous. He wants his students to get the most from his course and they only way to do that is to work to your full potential. Lab manuals were mostly straight forward and assignments/reports were reasonable.

Man this guys a prick. Pardon the language. Decken is sarcastic, demeaning, and rude. I was terrified of him. Didn't matter who or when, he'd make a fool out of you no matter how prepared you were. Don't bother showing up unless you're a complete genius, he WILL kick you out. Also AVOID if you're an engineering student he hates all of you. No joke.

I had him for chem lab and you had to know your stuff(IF YOU DID NOT YOU WOULD BE KICKED OUT OF THE LAB THAT DAY) however you really felt good when you did well in his class.
