Comment:
For CHEM410A, physical chemistry tends to be really tough since it is a subject we are all unfamiliar with. However, cooks makes the lectures clear, host review sessions before the exams, and there's the lab and online homework for even more points. Six 20 minute exams and one final but either way a great professor and curves (both 410A and 410B).

Comment:
Great professor considering physical chemistry is the toughest chemistry subject to teach. Cares about the students and even though the class is tough (6 exams, 2 part final for 410B) lowest exam grade is dropped. He started using course key but it's just a way to mark attendance. Either way, lectures are clear and concise and relevant to the test.

Dr. Cooksy is the nicest guy on campus. He's helpful, caring, and prioritizes the students' education. Make use of his office hours, Monday night review sessions, and emails. He offers them as resources for a reason. He is the author of the text he uses, most readable text I've ever had. Exams are 20 minutes and hard, but focus on the big picture.

Make sure you go to every class not only to learn but to show that you are trying. He is always available by email and has multiple office hours. I also highly recommend to go to the Monday Review Sessions, they are very helpful for the 6 exams. He is also very kind respectful and he makes sure to learn your name and how it's pronounced. Curved!!!

Physical chemistry is hard to learn and grasp onto, but Cooksy made it as comprehensible as he could. His office hours were useful and was eager to answer questions. His exams were tough and you had a limited time, but it's doable if you put in the time and effort in the class.

Absolutely brilliany professor. Very soft spoken, nice guy. Extremely helpful. Had Dr. Pullman for lecture, would have loved to have Dr. Cooksy but I can only imaginehow ridiculously hard his class would be.

He is one of the most helpful professors at this campus. He genuinely desires to see his students understand his material. He uses time efficiently which means you need to attend EVERY class, and take thorough notes (Reading the book alone won't cut, but you also need to know the book). Hard tests, but curve balances it so it's like Europe-style

Exams open book & open note but only get 20min to take exam. Questions are very difficult. Better to understand the info more than just memorize. I suggest doing ALL of the hw problems (assigned AND unassigned) because Cooksy may put similar questions. Must know book back and forth to find info quickly. overall nice prof, just hard class. 40% = C

Great professor, really makes you use your critical thinking during an exam. I really felt challenged during his exams (which were 10 multiple choice). You can really learned a lot from this professor if you make the effort.

Exams are brutal, 10 multiple choice answers for each problem. It honestly feels like the department enjoys when students do not pass exams. Because the avg. grade in exam 2 was a 30%, which was over 300 students. Do well in Lab and you can pass like me!

Taught only the very simple, basic material in class. I had to spend hours and hours outside of class teaching myself the material. Tests were way harder than any of the homework and the practice tests. Not enough time for tests and there were 10 multiple choice answers for every question. The only thing that saved me was the TA and my lab grade.

Hardest class EVER! I spent hours of frustration sitting at my computer trying to figure out the homework! Exams were a nightmare! The only people who do well in this class are the people who already have a solid knowledge of chemistry. Don't test into the 200 level like I did, unless you are prepared to put in the time.

I agree with everyone else. Completely useless course. SDSU's chemistry dept. is broken! The average in the course out of 300 - 350 people was a 50% overall. You will have to solve 3 problems before even knowing what the exam question is. and they give you 2 min per question. The T?A's are even worse, somewhat abusive! go to a Community college!

Dear lord. Has the most boring soft voice on the planet so you will for sure zone out within the first 15 seconds. Dont bother going to lectures unless you sit in the front row. Make sure you become close with TA so they can help. Office hours are mandatory if you want to understand anything

WORST. EVER. the average for exam two was a 30%. 10 possible answers for each question on the tests. He does not know how to teach a general chem class and assumes we know everything. please take this advice and take this class at a JC. I hear the other teacher(Beauvais) is horrible too but not as bad as crooksy

Extremely boring lectures, don't bother to go. Tests are a lot harder than practice exams (out of 10 choices to pick per questions). Class average is 50-60% for tests.

WORST PROF I HAVE EVER HAD! This guy is incapable of teaching, he thinks that you already know a whole bunch of stuff so he'll skip a whole bunch of steps. I would highly recommend taking this class at the community college to save yourself the pain of this incredibly difficult class. The average on his tests are usually F's, like less than 50% :(

Homework and assignments are usually really easy. But his tests are terrible. They are about 100X harder than any of his assignments. The highest score on his last test was 60%, thats out of the entire class, the average was about 40%.

The main difficulty with the tests is figuring out what its asking for and knowing you're limited in time, otherwise, the level of the material on it seems fair. Not that difficult to get a B since the range is so big and low, and he's very generous with partial credit. An A is 75% so it's easily achievable as well if you study right. Great class.
