Angus is hands down the best professor I've ever had. He's extremely educated in his subject and genuinely adores sharing his knowledge. Completely approachable, kind, witty, and an overall pleasure to be around. Tremendously accommodating of deadlines and paces the class according to their comprehension. I can't say enough about this wonderful man

Brilliant teacher. I graduated in 1994 and am now a higher-ed teacher myself. He's probably the best prof I've ever had. Thanks for the inspiration!

Such a motivational professor. In a tedious and hard to understand class like Anglo Saxon, he is very helpful and keeps his students on the right track! Also always makes lectures more fun with his one liners and funny puns. Did not want to take this class at all but Professor Somerville made it much more enjoyable! Great prof :)

I'm Alum (Grad 96)Hon's English Lang and Lit. Just glad to see people still think the same way about my Favorite Highland Scot! Still have very fond memories of seminars in his office on Tuesday nights over a cup of Angus brewed Espresso!

Somerville is so tiny and adorable. His jokes were so witty... but like another one said, I had this class at 8 am so they were often caught after the fact. He knows the subject well and has a great reading voice.

Such a wonderful Prof. Took as many of his classes as I possibly could. Even classes I had no interest in (ie. Anglo-Saxon). I highly recommend him.

One of few people who can make Chaucer understandable! Jokes and tangents keep you on your toes, while giving valuable background knowledge to the time period of the text. Difficult work, and a lot of it, but marks fairly and makes class interesting. Also willing to help any time, he's always available.

I love that we are introduced to both the history and the literature, so that we can make connections easily. His jokes are great, but you tend to miss them if you're tired! A lot of reading, but it's worth it in the end.

Had him for Chaucer. His lectures are a little dry but he is accomodating and makes sure that people understand the literature. You have to do some work in his course but as long as you make an effort, your mark reflects that!

Introduction to Old Norse: Refreshingly different from other department offerings. He is a remarkably learned and yet very approachable professor who obviously loves his subject. It's a privilege to take courses with him.

This man is awesome. Really smart, deep, really thinks outside the box. Lectures dont really help with exams, but missing a single lecture made me feel like i was missing important life lessons. He's really accomodative too, and super helpful. May be the studidest question, but he'll take time for u.
