Terrible class! It is not a matter of being challenged. I love a great challenge. I only ask for clarity. This woman is in a constant state of confusion, and it is apparent when she attempts to teach. Take my advice: Do not take this class!

Prof. Banfield wears lovely, coordinating outfits, loves to digress with stories of her european travels. brilliant, yet obscure at times. a francophile, often quoting french phrases. not terribly helpful in OH's, but what a sweet lady with a sharp sense of humor. attendance is important. read the material, her exams are very detailed.

Give her a chance. The reason I liked her is because she is so passionate about what she is teaching, she knows it so well, and she has contributed so much to the world of linguistic theory. If you are just at Berkeley to get out as easy as possible, don't take her class, but if you really want to challenge your mind, take her class...

Banfield's lectures just DON'T MAKE SENSE! Her examinations consist of terms and concepts which she DOES NOT COVER. She's hopelessly scattered and disorganized, often rude when you appraoch her for help. I opted for pass/fail during the second week and I thought that things would start making sense. I ended up doing a late withdraw. AVOID HER!

I would not recommend taking this class. Professor Banfield's lectures were extremely confusing. I agree with others about the final exam. There were things on the exam that weren't covered in class. My grade also went down after the final exam. It was definitely the worst class that I have ever taken at Cal.

This was the most difficult final exam that I have ever taken in my life. It was several pages long, and we hardly had enough time to complete it. My grade also lowered from an A- to a B, the only B I have received at Cal, after the final. Prof. Banfield is a very nice person, but unclear in her lectures. There was a tremendous amount of reading

torture! As English major, figured I'd explore linguistics, bad idea. ok material presented horribly. Structure of class flawed, little to no direction given. Midterm was verbatim study guide, and still hard. Final was rediculous, questions didn't even make sense, I gave up half way. Lowered my GPA in English 3.74 to 3.66. Advice: take it PNP.

an extremely intelligent woman, who might know a little too much information for the sake of the class, as her lectures are filled with wild (and very uninteresting) tangents. the course was often stressful because little or no direction was given for papers/exams. a very nice woman though.

Unless you plan to administer the Vulcan mind meld to her, forget about learning anything useful in her class, the text is 10x clearer and more helpful. For the final she gave us a study sheet which only ended up covering maybe 30% of what appeared on the test. So ridiculous I almost walked out.
