A great, very informative class. Topics are interesting. Shields is very competant with the material. A lot of reading but a very easy class nonetheless in my opinion.

Probably the best first semester teacher I had. If you are a feshman in search of classes to "slowly" introduce you to college this definitely isn't one. However, if you want to learn A LOT about Chinese culture and civilization with a really cool teacher to boot, then Shields is the prof for you!

Interesting, engaging, and not all that hard if you keep up with your reading. I got an A on the final with only a few hours of study time (due to my stupidity with the calendar), so it's seriously not that hard. Schedule a lunch break afterwards and keep up with your reading then, you'll be fine
