Comment:
Do not take this class unless you are okay with sitting through seemingly un-ending lectures. He made this class unnecessarily hard by quizzing us on subjective material and belittling students after demanding participation. He was also inconsistent, I could write the same paper twice and get drastically different grades.

Tremendous. Dr. Sutherland was hilarious and made a subject I'm not fond of bearable. Three papers, tough but not impossible. I would take him again in a heartbeat. Made an effort to get to know me too. Love him.

DO NOT TAKE HIM. While I was in Dr. Sutherland's class he just belittled me and told me I didn't sound as smart on paper as I do in person and asked me if I had dyslexia. I was an all A student until his class. Also, his grading scale is different from the university's so it is much harder to get a good grade!

He is very set in his opinions especially when it comes to papers. I had addressed this fact to him during office hours, but he didn't budge on his opinions. His lectures are boring at best and are usually really hard to stay awake through. Also, the amount of reading he assigns is funny because of how long it is. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!

Great man with some great stories but overall this was a very hard class. He is very set on his opinions and views about religion. Basically this class was an intense bible study with long boring lectures... take someone else if you can!

His grading is the most unfair, absurd tactic ever. I couldn't even tell you how he does it. He made us memorize a map of the Middle East and all of the books in the New and Old Testament. Good luck with all of his 5 papers because you'll only get a good grade if he agrees with your opinion.

Great teacher. he is definitely a stickler for time but becomes more relaxed later in the semester. He is someone that it takes time to understand but once you do you will enjoy his thoughtful lectures and participate. Class participation is important as well as reading. I was in African Religious Thought.

Typical liberal arts teaching style- low grades without much of a basis at first and then gradual progression to better grades. Expect a low B or high C in the end. Overall, the content was not bad and the lectures were well organized. A lot of reading, but he went over the main points in class.

Dr. Sutherland is the best professor I have had at Loyola, and I heavily encourage other students to take his classes. Sutherland is a great professor and an even better person, and has made me strive to become a better person as well. His class makes you reflect upon your own life, and this is an invaluable trait.

I LOVE HIM! There are three quizzes in the beginning but thats just memorizing the books of the Bible, then there are no homework assignments. He is AMAZING and his tests are easy as long as you slightly pay attention in class and his lectures are CAPTIVATING & he encourages class participation (he loves when people challenge him) Take HIM!!!

Not an easy class. Put a lot of time and effort into the class and it was still pretty hard. Can be hypocritical.

Most of these comments are way off base. Rude? Poor teacher? I never saw this. Does he like you dragging into class late? No, but who would? Plus, he tells you this the first day of class and he puts it on the syllabus. Stop crying about your own poor manners!

By far the worst professor that I have had the displeasure of learning from at Loyola. Sutherland loves to argue with his students, takes little to no interest in what we think or in how we do, and is generally rude and unhelpful. Classes were incredibly tedious and attendance was Draconian (only 1 miss). You'll learn from him but want to die first

This course fulfilled my theology requirement as part of the course rotation of the honors program, and ended up with Sutherland. Worst. Semester. Ever. I don't know what his problem in the classroom is, but it's probably some kind of paranoia about students disrespecting him. Given his behaviour towards us, he's right. Mediocre teaching quality

Most certainly THE WORST professor, and WORST EDUCATOR I have ever had in my entire life!! I do thank him because he made me realize how ridiculous theology is, after being raised Catholic. He makes theology the LAST thing you want to learn about. So rude, and disrespectful to his students, I think it is obvious that he has insecurities.

This is not a class that you are just going to walk through but Dr. Sutherland is great. I had no interest in African American Religious thought but he made the topic interesting for me. May not come off nice at first but stick through it, it is all worth it later. He will make you think!

Rudest, most unhelpful, least understanding professor I have had at Loyola. Had never taken theology before, struggled to understand his boring lectures & paper topics but when I went to him for help he did nothing & gave me horrible grades. I dropped the class mid semester & he threw my slip back at me & said "You wouldnt have passed anyway" RUDE!

Grade is heavily based on class participation and papers... the mid-term is impossible but seemed to have been omitted from the final grade. The goal/direction of the class lectures is very unclear but usually interesting. Doc is always willing to answer questions and strike up a debate. I recommend taking him if you like (and understand) theology!
