Comment:
Barry is such a nice man, but he is an economist and therefore his lectures are deathly dry. It's hard to follow him and understand the concepts. He marks really easy though, somehow I'm getting an A- and I could not tell you even one thing that I learnt.

Nightmare! Lectures all over the place, hard to follow and unclear. Willing to help you but any clarification is convoluted and long winded. Im 1/3 into Macro with Soper, normally a strait A student, and Im failing! He keeps posting the wrong study material on Brightspace and couldnt even do his own practice questions in class! Beware!

Heavy on Multiple Choice, but fair market with short answer, the quizzes in class suck but his assignments are good, he is a beauty, great guy!

His quizzes and midterm multiple choice questions are extremely difficult. Our average mark for multiple choice questions was below passing and he makes no effort to change it. Nicest guy but his lectures are hard to follow and exams are really tough. If you don't test well then don't take this class with him.

Super nice guy but not the best prof. Reads manufactured ppt slides and hard to follow along. Good things about him are he makes tests very fair and marks them easy. If you put a lot of effort into reading the material on your own and supplementing this with practice questions you will do fine

Well organized for every class. The work load is definitely heavy but Barry does a good job giving examples and real life situations in his lectures. Best thing was his powerpoints that are ALL posted online

Barry is a very nice guy but be prepared to supplement your learning. Barry reads from the slides and doesn't give a lot of in class examples. Everything is very theoretical. Test were VERY difficult and didn't really match the practice material. If you don't test well, don't take Barry's class.

Comment:
Although approachable, a clear speaker and well informed, Barry was not an ideal instructor. His lectures were read from the textbook manufactured slides (not his own). He does not respond to emails or get assignments back to you on time. Test questions were pulled from test bank questions (sometimes not even covered in class). Not recommended.

The best professor I've had at SMU. Barry Soper has a true appreciation for effort. He is willing to help out as much as possible. If only every professor at SMU could follow this example.

Not the worst prof I've ever had, but Barry is far from what an ideal instructor should be like. His classes are SO unengaging and boring that I nearly fell asleep in almost every one of them. Simply reads the ppt slides (that he doesn't even prepare) word for word. I'd probably avoid taking another course with him if possible..

Awesome prof! His midterms seem hard but I've always done really well on them. Taking his evening courses he has VERY simple in-class questions at the end of each class so by going to class and answering each question earns you 1%, in the end you can get a total of 10% higher JUST for going to class, MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE! take micro/macro w/ him

Take his class let it be introductory or advanced stuff. I had human resource eco with him and he was a really easy prof. For hr eco never ever buy the book and just do the extra readings/notes posted in blackboard.Term paper was easy because we were able to choose our own topic. TAKE HIS CLASS AND IT'S AN EASY "A".

Great (HILARIOUS) person overall but not the best prof. Easy economic elective if you want to boost your gpa. However, there was no guidance as to what was on his mid-term nor was there feedback on where you lost points. If you take his course though, be sure to show up to class for in-class participation points. Class was NEVER boring.

Take Hr Econ!! It is so much easier, and this prof explains things so well. I hated economics before this class, and now its not so bad! He is such a nice guy. Just attend class and pay attention, and you'll get an awesome mark. Despite what he says at the beginning of the course, do not buy the text book! You do not need it. Believe me.
