CONT: No lecture slides, no Moodle, no website. He does provide you with tons of paper handouts that is written by himself which I find hard to grasp and not too useful. Another thing is the assignments he gives you are HARD because he provides you with data and expects you to ANALYZE it when you're NOT taught how&the material is HARD to understand

He doesn't really teach but rather talks through his 3 hour lectures. He lectures as if we have the same knowledge of soils & sediments as he does - which we don't. So you will be playing catch up from day 1 and u still might not understand this material even if you put in effort. YOU REALLY GOT TO HAVE PASSION FOR SOILS, IF NOT, DON't TAKE COURSE

If u want to learn about soil science (and beer) @ York, Mahaney is the only person who's qualified. YOU WILL NEED TO DO READINGS & ATTEND LECTURES, otherwise you'll be lost. Lectures are lengthy, so make sure you are remotely interested in this stuff. Lectures are discussion heavy so be ready to participate and ask questions.

Professor Mahaney is one of the most understanding and helpful professors I have ever come across at York. He has always been so kind towards his students. His lectures are quite lengthy though. He is there always whenever you need his help.

Bill was my physical geo prof and he is a great teacher. His class was held in his office (6 of us total). People say that he is unclear but if you actually talk to him and ask questions he will help you understand the material. You'll learn a lot in his class because he does not spoon feed his students.

Yes you have to do your work in this class and you have to use your grey matter... This is not a snooze class show up when you want. Bill will help you one on one... show effort and rational behind your thinking..the labs & field are very important... first year is hard with him but it gets easier after that.... One of the top profs in his field...

Yes he rambles, uses a lot of jargon WAY above what anyone in the course should be expected to understand, and talks a lot about beer. BUT, if you listen to what you NEED to know (he couldn't point the arrow any closer), go to class, go to the field trip and do the readings you will do well in his course. Bill rules!

The most unlikeable person ever, and actually told hi class we were stupid. The worst performance by myself in 5 years, and from my understanding by past students and faculty Mahaney was very consistant as an unlikable man, as well as a difficult professor. Avoid if possible

Careful here. Unless you're prepared to do a lot of extra reading, be careful. Prof uses a lot of terminology that went over my head, as well as going into things that I had no previous knowledge about.

This was a very very difficult class. Nice Prof., but talks way above average person. This class really turned me off Physical geog. Do not take this course in Atkinson if his name is listed. Boring material,& a real sleeper.

Bill is a great guy. His lectures can be confusing, as he uses geo jargen constantly, and mentions beer at least once a class. However, if you go to every class AND the field trip, you somehow manage to do well. Give him a break and you'll learn a lot.
