Even though this was my first semester here, Blanche was and probably will be the best professor I'll have. She was supportive throughout the semester and always pushed us to do better. She'll tell you everything about her life and it's amazing to hear. She's a little flaky and can be unclear but it's completely worth it

Blanche is awesome. She is very open and will share her life story with you, in turn she is open to listening to you and will help you with anything you need even if it has nothing to do with the class. She's also no bull, she calls it like it is and will speak her mind.

The main thing about Blanche is that she will give you all the tools you need, but ultimately you have to do all the heavy lifting to find meaning in your own work. She is very accommodating and is close to her students. Her dogs are very cute.

Blanche will challenge you but if you want to get the most out of the class and her wisdom you need to challenge her. Ask her to explain things and let her know when you disagree. Its pretty common that people deify or demonize her mostly because she treats you in an honest way, but there's always something interesting/valuable to learn from her.

By far the best teacher and mentor I've ever had. If you are looking for an instructor who will make you THINK and TEACH you something about writing, about the world and about yourself show up, listen and work hard. It's true that her classes aren't highly structured but that's what I liked most -- every single class was a high point.

People who talk badly about Blanche are people who can't take criticism. If your writing isn't good, she'll tell you. That's part of learning to be a better writer. She will talk to you as an artist speaking to an artist, which is so important. Takes students very seriously, so long as they take the craft seriously and don't get cocky about it.

Blanche is honest, funny and real.She's hard not to like and impossible to forget. And she clearly has a passion for writing. Her classes, though, lack structure. Chances are, a poor writer entering the class will leave the class a poor writer. It's more of an open forum to share your work.

She's insightful, funny, and always entertaining. She lets you know that she's a real person, not an authority from on high. I graduated in 1999 and still think about her wisdom, although there are certain structural elements of writing that I wish she'd covered.
