Well, I did not put too much effort at all into that course so did not end up with a good grade. Totally personal reason and I don't blame the prof at all. My classmates seem to enjoy his lectures and he seems to be a reasonable grader.

He is a nice person but as a teacher he is far from great. I am not convinced that he really understands some of the algorithms he teaches; otherwise he would be much more confident answering questions. His assignments are not clearly explained, sometimes even confusing.

Jian is very interested in the area of data mining and it shows. He is very passionate in his lectures and conveys the material well. English is an issue for him, very thick accent and sometimes he is hard to understand. Other than that very good. Would highly recommend for this class.

The classes in the first week were great. He touched some interesting and far from trivial topics immediately. The explanation is so clear that I had an easy time to read the textbook. I am looking forward to more in the course.

easy class in terms of content. project for 15% is bs since it's just using tablets to show HP that he's actually doing something with them (learning nothing db oriented) and too much work for 15%. overall easy exams and assignment marking resulting in high average of class and 80% being a B-.

Lots of material and workload, but worthwhile learning. Understandable lecs although his English is fluent but problematic. Somewhat challenging asns, but eventually doable. TA is a nice marker. Major pbms are the 15% semesterlong project (tedious data cleaning and programming) and the bell curve which actually lowers grades of many students.

Nice, competent prof. Lectures not engaging and too connected to slides. Follow the class and put the required time into the project and you'll do fine. Recommended.

He often talks about practical concerns and solutions, which cannot be found in our textbook. The materials are not easy, but quite useful afterall. I got something really helpful in job hunting. I realized that only after my interviews. The final grades were surprisingly nice. I wish I had spent more time on it.

will this guy ever understand that developing a project of that size is human impossible for a group of 2 people? The TA helps us a lots "marking" it. Take this class if you like to read the book too.. sometimes he doesn't explain some topics very clearly or he doesn't explain at all...

Course overall is okay. His pronounciation is annoying, as are the typos in his notes. Wait until he talks about taking fuzzy dumps. He is genuinely a nice guy, but VERY high expectations for the project. Partners should be mandatory or else you will probably fail due to lack of time. Assignments and midterm were fair. ie: give examples of...
