Comment:
Dr. Howell definitely has a lot of expectations for reading. He has pop-quizzes, which for my class turned out to be most every class, and the quizzes are based off of pretty specific concepts and examples in the readings. Going to class was great, and the discussions are good, but the outside of class work was too much for a non-Anthro major.

I enjoyed the class over all. Dr. Howell is very knowledgeable and is very passionate about the subject. However, do not skip class because the quizzes will add up and he will try and punish those who skip with quizzes. But overall you learn a lot in his class and he is very funny and engaging in class.

Dr. Howell is passionate and knowledgeable, but day to day class is discussion-based in its nature. I found the material interesting, though occasionally the amount to read is a bit overwhelming. He's hilarious and engaging, and I actually found him to be quite open-minded. I learned a TON in this class and the way i see cultures is forever changed

Dr. Howell is passionate and knowledgeable. He's really sharp-tongued and sarcastic, which some people are put off by. But he's really interesting and very engaged on campus. He cares about his students. He has some strong opinions, but he can admit when he's wrong. I liked his class a lot, and I have a lot of respect for Dr. Howell.

Angry and cynical. Class is interesting but he overanalyzes simple things and thinks he is smart because of it. You would be better of taking Folch for your Anthro.

Best gen ed i've taken. Not the easiest, but it actually changed the way I interact with and understand people. If youre frustrated or confused about the conversations you hear/take part in about race on campus, take this class. It'll blow your mind.

Easily the best class I've taken at wheaton. If you're sick of hearing about race, or your just confused by the conversations you hear/take part in on campus, take this class. Not the easiest gen ed, but the best class I've taken in regards to actually shaping the way I see the world and understand people.

Comment:
My experience in Dr. Howell's class was terrible. He is uninterested in hearing opinions opposite his own. He uses humor and sarcasm to win over the class, and then states all of his opinions as facts. He praises himself on his understanding of other cultures, while constantly degrading Americans. He does not represent Wheaton College well.

This is not an easy A class. Dr. Howell will definitely challenge your preconceived notions and you will absolutely come out of the class knowing more about the world around you, but as far as being an easy gen ed, it isn't. However, if you do the extra credit you should be fine.

He's brilliant. Lectures are fascinating and the material is relevant and will challenge all your preconceived notions about race, gender, and culture. The assignments are not difficult, Dr. Howell is very willing to help with papers etc. if you need it. Quizzes are a challenge if you haven't taken careful notes. No exams, all quizzes are open book

Dr. Howell is one of the best professors I have had at Wheaton. I took this class as a gen ed, but his class was one of my favorites. I told all my friends to take his class and they all loved him. He's hilarious-- a little on the liberal side. His class isn't very difficult.

Dr. Howell is an amazing professor. His lectures are insightful and clear, and his class not only taught me the craft of anthropology but it shaped the way I think about the world. One of my top two best classes at Wheaton so far.
