Comment:
Brian forces his students to spend money. If you're attempting to take Photo 1, pick a different professor. His first 2 assignments are to waste the first 2 roles of film he gives you. He then assigns a third assignment without giving you the extra film you're supposed to be provided. The final project is on more expensive paper than what's given.

Brian is a fantastic guy and doesn't get enough credit for how great he is. He really wants you to become the best photographer you can. Yes, he is tough and expects a lot out of you but it is really for you own benefit. Take him!!

Brian is a fantastic photography teacher. He tends to receive reviews for being "too harsh" because many people who are taking this class are taking it for fun. He is technique heavy but he knows how to teach it. He is super underrated and if you ask him questions he is more than willing to help.

any interest I had in film photography after taking this class has gone out the window - Brian assigns projects that are unmanageable for a beginner photo class and is so unhelpful when it comes to asking him questions because his opinion changes every time you show him something. His demos are unhelpful/confusing plus he's pretentious/arrogant

I loved professor Moss' class, it was honestly my favorite class of the semester. He wants you to work in and out of class to improve your skills, and he helps you do it. Yes he can be strict with grading sometimes but it's not without reason, he's very fair.

He really only cares about what is technically right. Such a tough grader for a photo one class! Expects you to be a perfect printer. If ANYTHING is wrong with it, automatic B. If he doesn't like your photography style, prepare for an uphill battle. You also have to write extremely detailed papers, but he doesnt give many examples.

If you're creative andor passionate about photography don't let him know because you will automatically take yourself out of the running for an A. He prefers spontaneous work without conceptualization. I suggest turning in 2 of the same photo that have different levels of contrast because his taste changes by the hour.

He teaches photographic techniques as though you've already done it 100 times, and considering I took a Photo 1 class with him, it was frustrating to feel as though I'm putting him out just to go over something another time. Doesn't really guide you in an artistic sense; it's all about what is "technically" right; BORING! It's an art class! C'mon!

Avoid taking him. talks down to students and along with the creepy lab tech just look at you like you have a deficiency when you ask questions, like they were clearly superior to you and wanted to let you know. Just not cool guys. there should be much better photo teachers at lmu.

after reading comments, YOU GET OUT WHAT YOU PUT IN. Brian is a no nonsense type of teacher, if he notices you trying to BS him, he will not grade you well. If students just did the work, then they would pass with a B, but if you want the A, you have to put in extra time. Very technical.

The class requires a lot of work. and if you are willing to devote the time, it can be easy. ASK HIM FOR HELP, AND USE THE IN-CLASS LAB TIME WISELY. I find that the prof talks down to his students, which I find extremely disrespectful, but at least he will help you improve your prints and photos if you ask him. Textbook helpful.

You must be willing to put in quite a bit of time to get the grade in this class. I'm not an artist, I'm a business major, but I loved this class and I pulled an A-. Had to work my butt off in the darkroom, but he's very helpful if you show him you care about improving your work and learning. Don't be afraid to ask lab techs for help, they're aweso

Prior to this class, I loved photo. Unfortunaytely this class took all the fun out of taking pictures. Brian Moss is threatened by talented students and he will not give you an A no matter how hard you try to prove yourself. If you like having a life don;t take this class. Take Kelly for sure. Moss will make you hate photo.

IĆ¢€™ve never experience a phenomenon quite like bm. he's a horrendously bad teacher. I loved photography prior to his class, and now just find myself dreading picking up a camera. He takes the magic out...he's like an evil magic-stealing gnome from hell! Stay away at all costs. Take Kelly for photo 1

he tells you prints or good or how to do them to get them perfect ... you do them, and then he nitpicks at them and doesn't like them. he's threatened by students who already know the darkroom and is not nice toward them and treats them unfairly. he makes photo not fun and enjoyable as it should be.
