I absolutely love Bruce and this class. There is a lot of reading but the books are great and he makes you want to read them. He obviously cares about his students, always making dumb jokes to get us to smile. 10/10 prof, 10/10 class.

Nice and reasonable man, makes lots of bad jokes and loves self deprecating humor always telling us stories about his failed attempts at coaching sports. Expect to read ALOT, also a pretty bias selection of books usually geared more towards men his age (about Vietnam and JFKs presendency, religion and more patriarchial ideas) but a good teacher.

Bruce is a great guy and I could sit and listen to his stories for years. It's a 4000-level ENG course so you should know what you're getting yourself into. He's so personable and really cares about the reading and what students think. Awesome to take if you're an ed major. Love this weird man.

Bruce is okay. He goes off topic a lot during class discussions, to the point where I barely participated and I did just fine. Very bland and his film choices are tough to watch a lot of the time. You have to write a response paper on every film and take a quiz the next day. It's a bit much.

I understand the importance of depressing films , but I do not appreciate when only sad/messed up movies are hailed as the epitome of film. Happy, feel good movies can be important as well. Films included murder, violence, sexual assault, discrimination, and war. He did not bother to mention any of this before he made us watch the films.

Bruce is so dope. Straight up, I took his class freshman year and it changed my perspective on societal race relations. I saw one bad review, and that must have been from a salty minority, because when he said he is a "minority" in class, he went on to explain in depth how that is both a right and wrong statement. Great readings, great learning.

So so sooo very knowledgeable about what he is teaching. The readings for the class were absolutely amazing. The class meetings were amazing. Bruce is an absolutely fabulous professor. The only negative comment I have is that some things were "dumbed" down but I think that is because the course is cross listed in gen ed as well as english major.

Great professor with a cool perspective. Very open to class discussion and loves to discuss the hard topics (which is a good thing). Is a bit scatter-brained but always willing to help and super laid back. Would take again for sure.

This class was basically getting assigned reading and going in and, getting a reading quiz 50% of the time, listening to him talk and then a couple of students talk about the book, and then occasionally getting a paper to write which there were only two. There is a essay midterm and then a paper final. He is a nice and pretty funny guy.

Bruce is honestly the most pretentious professor I've had at App. His lectures are incredibly boring and do not relate to the books. He acts as if he's interested in what students have to say, but then rambles about himself for hours. I'm in an African American lit class, he's white, and he called himself a "minority."

Bruce was an interesting professor. Yes, classes can be pretty boring because he tends to ramble. But he loves class discussion and only rambles when the class is feeling shy. He really knows his stuff though and you can clearly see his passions come out in class

Bruce was awesome. I had him for African American lit. and really enjoyed it. We wrote two papers (3-5 pages) and our final exam was a take home essay question. We read about 4 novels that were all really interesting. He's really nice & really helpful with everything!

One of my favorite professors at App! Took his Am Lit class for my capstone and had a great experience. I loved the books we read. You only write 6/7 reaction papers which are just your thoughts about the books and one end of semester paper. Not a hard grader. Wasn't interested in Am. Lit before, love it now. If you want a laid back class take him!

I had Bruce for African-American Lit (his specialty) this summer. The class read five novels, there were reading quizzes, and there were three big papers. Bruce is a great professor, is very knowledgable in his area, and will go out of his way to help you. He changed my opinion of African-American literature for the better.

Bruce is a great guy. I took Intro to Film with him over the summer. It was a great experience. Watch all the films, write the papers (not too difficult) and read the pages assigned and you will do fine. Bruce is probably one of my favorite professors at App.

Prof Dick isn't a very good professor. He is smart and knows a lot about what he is talking about but we had to read a lot of books and all of them are full of dark topics and they were depressing. He rarely stays on topic. We had reading quizzes and he grades the papers hard. Not a very personable guy at all. I don't recommend taking him.

Professor Dick was not really what I expected. We hardly ever talked about the reading... the whole hour and fifteen minutes was basically him talking about everything but what was relevant. I thought it was kind of a waste of time.

Good guy, good teacher. He makes the subject matter interesting, and he really knows his stuff. I said textbook use was high. I took Afro. American Lit. with him, and there are assigned readings. 5 books, read EVERYTHING. 2 3-6 page papers, 1 mid-term, and a comprehensive final...overall a good teacher.

Had him for African American Lit. Great guy, ridiculously funny. Going to class was a pleasure and an entertainment. He gets off on tangents and runs with them. The stories are okay. Journals are ridiculous. Three papers and a 15 page research paper. It's not impossible to make good grades if you attend and do the work.
