Comment:
Definitely my LEAST favourite class. He often goes off topic and never told the students about the textbook readings, causing students to fall behind. Also, there are additional readings and quizzes that he doesn't prepare the students for. There is heavy bias in his lectures which is sometimes taken to extreme levels. Don't take this class.

I love History. I did all of the work and studied hard. BUT this class was difficult to feel successful in. Shelvey's lectures are inspirational, not because of the content, but because he offers practical applications for transforming today's society. Loved going to classes, not d-groups. He didn't give us time to talk or foster discussion.

Really great guy, I myself love Canadian History and I think Shelvey know his stuff, and he is very passionate as well. However he easily goes off topic and can sometimes go into a rant in the middle of the lecture. But overall a great guy and good material, but he should just stick to the history.

His lectures are really long and sometimes confusing. He's also really passionate, but most of the time you have no idea what he's passionate about. Nice enough guy, but fairly frustrating. Watch out for the EHA and for pity sake use details or it's not even worth doing.

This grad course load is an INSANE amount of work. The course is also postmodern historiography, so if you don't love poststructuralism, you might be frustrated. But the prof is amazing, caring, and great at faciliating grad seminars. Hang in there. It's one of those classes you're super glad you took when your finished. Anyone can do well.

One of the best classes I ever took at TWU. He is a great professor this class is really close to his heart and he is very passionate about it. I loved listening to his lectures and working on our end journal project. You won't regret taking this class. He is very helpful and really hopes you walk away with some great insight in the FN relations

Shelvey is an awful prof. It's almost as though he wants us to have existential crises from taking his class...but learn nothing. His methodology does not foster learning.

Shelvey is super passionate about the subject he teaches, although sometimes he emphasizes too many things making it hard to know what's vital. Take notes, read the text and TAKE THE STUDY QUIZZES ONLINE. It's sometimes hard to "read his mind" when it comes to assignments and it's not always clear what he wants in paragraph responses or essays.

Makes history interesting, and cares about his students, but an A+ in his class seems nearly impossible. Read the textbook and if he gives online links to practice quizzes, do them.

AWESOME lecturer. Super passionate about what he teaches. In-class notes are terrible for studying, though. Super difficult to assess what needs to be studied for exams. Not always very clear in answering student questions, either. But still worth taking a class from because he makes even boring things (Cndn history) incredibly interesting!!!

Great prof, really enjoyed his class, such a passion for canadian history. Was definitely my favourite class first semester but one of my most challenging. Read the textbook for the midterm! For added entertainment we kept track of how many times, per class, he used the word 'notion'. Try it.

Amazing prof! I didn't do as well as I know I could have, but it's clear that he has a passion for Canadian history, as well as a huge passion for God and helping students succeed. I recommend this class to anyone and everyone!

Hard marker, requires a lot for a 100 level paper. Sometimes I was not quite sure of the content, material that he was trying to get across.

Horrid communicator. he presented the information as " I want the concepts and ideas from this argument, not the facts and dates as much" then oh yay- we get tested on facts such as on the midterm " what were the three major crops fo the acadians... wheat oats barley.. peas??" seriously- find someone else he is a stress bomb waiting to go off.

hated history before taking the class, now i love it, because in the way he taught it, i was forced to view it from a different perspective. yes, there is a lot of work and yes he's a super hard marker, but my thinking has changed and that's what i think is important

the class was very frustrating during the first few weeks because it was his first time teaching the class..everything seemed vague and disorganized, but it eventually got a LOT better..I learned a lot and actually found it interesting..he's a brilliant man..just a bit disorganized in terms of making lesson plans and following through with them..
