I have a lot of experience drawing and was top of the class (there was definite favoritism) yet this class was STILL more work than the stem courses I was taking (im only an art minor). Don't take just to fulfill a GE or if you have 0 experience, only do it if you're serious about art bc there are a LOT of assignments. My skill has improved tho.

A very caring and understanding instructor. It's beginner's drawing, so it's a lot of basic drawing skills that you learn. If you miss a class you HAVE to catch up because a lot of the assignments deal with the skills you learn in the lecture. He gives you a lot of room to grow as an artist and gives really good help if you ask for it. Loved it!

Calvin Yip is one of the greatest professors ive had while attending CSUN. Although he is a tough grader he will definetly teach you how to draw. If you are not an art major this class will be difficult. Yip is very understanding and he has a great sense of humor. He is very talanted and im almost guaranteed he is a ninja.

His lectures are really good for people with a background in art. He teaches you some technique cuts straight to the point. Unfortunately he doesn't notice the progress of a noob. I mean that reflects he's a fair grader, but if you dont have that background, it will not be an easy A or B or C..

The biggest thing was that even though this was a introductory art class, he taught from the top down, and compared all the work to the best work in the class. People like me who had experience in art were fine, but I know many of my classmates who weren't artists struggled as a result of his tough grading. If you have experience in art, it's easy.

As a first time freshman, he was the best class I ever had. He teaches really well and will help you with anything. He will also give you helpful advice. I really enjoyed this class. Beware, If you do NOT have any experience with drawing at all, this will NOT be an easy A.

He grades his art assignments way to harshly for students leaning to draw. I expected to take this GE as an easy course, but he made sure that didn't happen. he is condescending and RUDE. Other art124 profs are much nicer, take them instead. Also the supplies are ridiculous. 140$!!! Drop it!

Calvin is by far the most important person i encountered at CSUN. He is kind, caring and supportive while still being realistic when you need advice. He helped me out while i was struggling with my depression. As a professor, he is amazing and supportive. If you put in the effort, hell take notice and help you out. Dont take if you expect an easyA

I wasn't an art major but taking this class was very fun and enjoyable. He tries his best to help the students who aren't necessarily the best in this field, but i would definitely recommend this class to anyone. If you have a good sense of humor you'll find him hilarious

It is not necessarily your ability coming in, but the time and willingness to endure feedback. The class is difficult but you have every chance to get a good grade, you can make up any assignment if you didnt like your grade to receive a new score. I learned a lot and Professor Yip is fair and helpful. Highly recommend.

I have always wanted to take a drawing class (not my major). He completely turned me away from art appreciation. He played favorites, giving students who have been drawing for YEARS A's, where I got no higher than C's on every assignment even though my work improved drastically over the semester. Isn't helpful and don't recommend taking w/ him.

do not take this class if you know nothing in art. the professor is so helpful and friendly, but the material is rough for someone who know nothing in art! do not take it for GE only, instead take art 100!

Probably the best professor I've had since I started CSUN 3 years ago. Excellent professor with a friendly attitude. Never discouraged anything you did but did help by suggesting other options. Is very helpful and understanding and is full of incredible knowledge. I honestly recommend him to everyone! Would take this class again.

Great professor! He jokes around, but is serious in his teaching. He will motivate you and help make suggestions on ways to improve your work. The class was Art124 "B", so he expects you to have some art knowledge. Assignments are straight forward; he will explains them and shows student examples. You must be prepared to draw a lot! (duh)

One of the best artists in class, held me to higher standards than the rest of the class. Did not "instruct" or "teach" us one thing. Complete waste of time and money. *Avoid * will never take another class he teaches again.

Absolutely amazing teacher!!! He really enjoys watching students develop their work and creative ideas. Teaches well and gives great advice. I still go talk to him about assignments for other classes and he's super helpful! Just don't be lazy- he'll be able to tell the difference between laziness and your ability.
