Even though it's numbered as a higher level course, it was more of an intro course because it teaches you how to write a solid research paper. You had to put in the work to get the grade but his mandatory meetings relieved a lot of the pressure one has crafting a research paper on their own. Very personable and gives great feedback

Comment:

His Writing in Political Science class is a good one. Not too much work, and multiple weeks throughout the semester are one-on-one meeting weeks, so no actual class. The one-on-one meetings are helpful for your writing skills. Fair grader but not super easy. Explains things well and is helpful outside of the classroom.

Comment:

Covington is one of my favorite professors at the University of Iowa. I am graduating next semester and I'll have taken 4 of his courses. My favorite thing about him is that he wants you to understand the big concept ideas and not so focused on details. You don't have to memorize for test, just have a general understand of material. Well respected

Imagine your grandpa. He gives off that vibe. Clearly knows what he is talking about but is pretty dull and boring. Pulls from lecture and reading for exams. Exams are kinda difficult. Not the easiest survey class- and that's coming from a Poli Sci major

Amazing professor. If you are interested in politics then he is a great fit. I took Intro to American Politics, and he is one of the most knowledgeable professors I have had in awhile. Did not use the book at all, and his lectures covered all of the test material. Just show up to class and take decent notes and you will be set.

Professor Covington is legit (I had him for Intro to American Politics, The American Presidency, and will be taking a 3rd course with him this Spring). Great dude who really knows his material. He covers some very, very interesting topics. Lectures can be long, but overall he's solid. Not many exams or papers, so it's crucial to do well on them.

Definitely my favorite teacher so far! He wants students to understand the material and loves when you go to office hours. Is partially deaf so you have to speak up when talking to him. He gave out a lot of extra credit opportunities. He can get boring when lecturing but the info he talks about was interesting. Goes on tangents often.

Comment:

Professor Covington is great. Although long and sometimes boring, his lectures are extremely informative. His tests are fair, and he is approachable. Unlike some of the other higher-level Poli Sci profs I've had, I would recommend Covington to anyone, regardless of their major.

Though his lectures are long, you can tell Cary is passionate about teaching. The tests aren't horrible but the questions are a little tricky. Must read the book.

Fantastic professor, know his stuff more then any guy. Very clear in his lecture. If you take notes religiously, when it comes time to study you will have absolutely no problem. Is also deaf in one ear, so class participation isn't part of the picture at all, so it can be tempting to skip. Will hurt you when it on the midterm though.

I am a poli sci major, prof Covington is 1 of the best instructors I have ever had. He isn't an "easy" grader, but respects all opinions, and if you put in effort, you will receive grades that reflect that. I now specifically look for courses taught by him! soft spoken, lectures sometimes boring, learn a lot & easier tests, but key is go to class

Professor Covington is a very clear, interesting lecturer. He will talk about the readings some, but you really don't need to do them. Class can get a little boring at times, and I wish he used more discussion. He really is a great professor, though. Easy A if you have some prior knowledge of the material.

Great prof, great class! Clear lecture. Knew his stuff. Engaging small group discussions. You will learn SO MUCH. Prof was helpful and kind and grandpa-like. I am sad the class is over. Definitely take it even if you aren't a poli sci major.

Good class teaches a lot of important stuff people should know about politics..Lectures are right off of a powerpoint thats posted online so attendance isnt mandatory..midterms suck tho
