This was one of the hardest classes I've ever had. He will not respond to anyone's emails. Teaches an entry level class like a graduate class. Is not available outside of class and will only make his "office hour" 50 minutes. If you say you're confused he basically tells you that you're not and continues on. he will contradict the book as well.

This prof was one of the worst prof's I have ever taken here at ISU. He basically told our class that it was our fault we did not understand how anything he was talking about related to our class. (He was talking about his trips to Germany)

The class very productive. I learned a lot from him. I really enjoy his classes. I almost took all his class that he offers. You need to have more reading then only the textbook this is what I love. He has so much knowledge about what he teaches. I am proud to be his student. Respect for Dr. Nelson.

Rambles often. Hard to understand him when he mumbles all the time. Gets off track easily. To get a good grade in this class, read the chapters and read his handouts on blackboard. Never got much from class, but scraped by doing the previously mentioned things. I don't recommend him. :(

He's the worst and most frustrating professor ever!! He doesn't answer your questions and is very confusing. He stands in front of the class and rambles about stuff that has nothing to do with anything the entire class time. I've learned nothing from this class. Do not take him!!!

He is the most amazing professor ever. The only prerequisite in his classes is DO THE WORK! Be prepared to learn a lot, do independent reading, and ask smart questions. Don't sit around yawning and playing on your phone. High school is over...

I have him twice this semester (LING 210 and 413). 210 is definitely doable once you understand his style. 413/513 is also a graduate course, unfortunately he expects basically the same work from undergrads, as well. He does tend to ramble, and is set in his ways, but he's not all bad.

If you can write using correct English and take initiative, you'll be OK (it is college). His sense of humor can be an "acquired taste," but once you get to know him a little, he's not that bad. But don't bog him down with redundant, irrelevant comments/questions, like what he expects from you--as I said, he wants you to take the initiative.

This guy babbles with weird stories. Ooh! Makes my eyes so funny! He makes the subject less interesting because of the way he teaches. He is not open to discussion, or helpful with questions. So good luck if you take his class. At least he is lax on attendance. In the class, his handouts are crucial but they are always posted on Blackboard. Q.E.D!~

I have no idea how I passed, but I had to take the class for my major. Don't take it unless you absolutely have to. He likes to make you write alot on tests (lots of essay q's), so be prepared. Never really understood what I was doing, so I just pulled crap out of my butt, and I guess he thought it was good enough to pass. Good luck!

I know most of the students who've been through Dr. Nelson's classes come out hating him, but I thought he was funny and enjoyed his tangents. for linguistics 210 I did think it was challenging, but i came out more fascinated with the subject and consequently changed my major to linguistics.

I saw some of the horrible comments on this professors and figured I should clear up confusion. If you are a graduate student, you are more than prepared for him and may even consider him easy. But undergrads beware, he teaches all classes as if they were upper level. He is not that bad, though.

I had him for two semesters in a row, for Linguistics 210 and Ling 316/613, in which this class was taught at the graduate level, and we, as undergrads in this class were expected to do the grad level work along with a midterm on a whopping 13 chapters!
