This guy knows computers. Period. One of the few guys that can explain what happens right down to the transistors. Sure he goes on tangents and his fashion sense is 1/5, but he's a good prof. You must take at least one of his classes to truly experience Comp Sci at U of C.

People are going crazy on walpole. My guess is that when it came to studying you didn't study enough! This is an easy course and getting a B+ or higher with almost no work is simple. Study for rouhgly 6 hours for his midterm and 12 for his final (if you haven't done anything the whole semester) and it will be an easy A!

The man knows his stuff and can tell you things about computers that will either amaze or bore you. He's easy to pass, hard to get an A+. If you enjoy learning about computers he can actually show you how they work, he has a collection of old parts he brings and can describe how every one works, including one he built in the 1970s. Fun course.

If you are passionate about what he is teaching you will find all of his little "ramblings" fascinating and enjoyable. If you are taking courses with Walpole looking for easy marks / options then you should consider another prof. He has lots of valuable information to share, but expect harder assignments with a higher level of understanding.

Fantastic. Thoroughly enjoyed this class with him, very eccentric man that has a lot of gems to share with his students if you are listening. Extremely knowledgeable and interested in the topics, and helpful when needed. Im glad I got to know him.

I don't remember one useful lecture in this class. All the materials I had for exam I got from self study. The question is why did I have to kill 3 hours a week to attend?

Absolutely horrific. He rambles on about whatever crosses his mind during lectures. He probably covers actual material related to the course about 30% of the lecture. If you can take this course with somebody other than Chris Walpole... DO!

He's a smart guy, but his lectures are absolutely intolerable. He is perfectly willing to ramble on about whatever crosses his mind, whether it relates to the course material or not. (It usually doesn't.) If you can take CPSC 325 from someone else, you probably should.

I'm sure he's a nice guy and all, but any professor who gives me an ulcer gets a thumbs-down by default in my book. He clarified (read: changed) a major assignment specification on the day before it was due. Apparently, he did so last semester as well.

An excellent professor! Disorganized at the start but quickly found his stride. Polite and modest, and willing to sit with students and work out problems in person, as well as visit the lab on occasion to see how people are doing.

I'm taking a Wally minor and I'm liking even more for 421 than I did for 455. Fantastic prof, he doesn't play along with a lot of the retarded politics a lot of other profs get themselves in to. Down to earth & totally genious. To actually want to LEARN something, go for Wally or get the hell out.

Wally rocks. If you actually care about this stuff, then he's a great prof to have. If you're one of those folks who's just there to get the degree, then you'll be bored with 455.. Walpole is a great prof and I'm really glad I had him!
