She looks intimidating but she's actually pretty friendly. Just be respectful (by not looking at your phone), do the reading and talk frequently in class and you'll be fine. I read reviews on here and got nervous about the class but it's actually one of the easier Gen Eds I've ever taken, even over J-term.

Dr. Downing is a great professor for majors. However, I was a non major in her class so some of her participation requirements seemed extra. Also, a lot of the film history material wasn't covered properly in class to be able to complete her exam with confidence. I do appreciate film/plays, but the class caused some unnecessary stress.

Takes your phone away if you use it, as if we are still in high school. Extremely disrespectful at times. Gives a crazy amount of work, and then grades it harshly. I learned a lot in this class because I was forced to do a bunch of busywork to just pass the class. If your trying to take a GenEd, stay far away from her.

Crystal Downing is a very good instructor. She is very intelligent and has a lot of insight. She also expects a lot of work from the students and gives a lot of good feedback. Very unprofessional however. She can have a difficult personality to deal with, and doesn't allow disagreements.

Dr. Downing was a wonderful professor and woman. She really takes an interest in her students, and she's super entertaining as a lecturer. Hysterical, fun loving, and easy going a person, she's very giving of feedback and time for her students. She does expect a lot of students. I had a 95 in the class until the final. Ended with a 90.

Dr. Downing has high expectations for her students. But if you put in the effort, you will learn more in her class than in just about any other class you take at Messiah. She loves to teach and is fabulous at it. Her classes are never boring. If you enjoy English and aren't afraid of hard work, you'll love her class.

Wow, did I learn! Dr. Downing really knows her stuff. While she can be intimidating at first, you get used to her personality. Her knowledge of Victorian England amazed me. Best class I've taken at Messiah.

I learned so much from Dr. Downing and I thought her class was really interesting. She also teaches some film and advertising courses so you'll see a lot of those similar topics in her class. She is a harsh grader though and rather eccentrically loud and likes her students to speak their mind. Her class won't kill your GPA But be prepared to work.

Taking this class was by far the worst choice. This teacher expects a ridiculous amount of work just to get a passing grade. Her grading system is nothing short of absurd. Extremely boring class. But the worst part by far is the absolutely ridiculous, unbelievably horrible amount of work required.

she knows how to teach but perhaps that has gone to her head. basically she thinks her class and her opinion of you will determine your entire future. unless you talk a lot, she assumes the WORST of you. plus she can be rather CONDESENDING. but if you worship her, she'll love you and you'll do fine.

Dr. Downing is the reason I stayed an English major; Eng. 108 was the foundation for everything major-related that I learned at MC. Unlike high school teachers, she was able to tell me what I did Right in writing. She is understandably tough--her class is the "do or die" entrance to English at MC--but her teaching/work is superb. Listen carefully.
