He goes through material super fast but he definitely knows what he's talking about. He assigns optional homework every week but I would do it if you want to do well on quizzes. Midterm is really similar to practice midterms. He gave out candy for a few weeks to everyone that answered questions and he makes jokes a lot which is cool

Dr. Lewis is pretty funny at times, but overall, gets frustrated and has random anger outbursts in class. He is not very approachable and there are weekly quizzes which have few problems, so it's really all or nothing (usually nothing). The quizzes will bring you down. He was, however, nice enough to give us an open book final.

Fall16 .Knows his stuff VERY well, pretty funny at times. But tends to bulldoze through lectures - can hardly understand him most of the times. The good thing is he wrote the txtbook - if you read it CAREFULLY, do ALL of the practice problems, and ask for help when needed, it's not so bad. HW not mandatory. Weekly quizzes, 1 midterm, 1 final exam.

Really great professor- knows his stuff. Lectures are entertaining and he does far more than just read the slides. Responds to student questions in-depth and to the best of his ability. You can tell he really loves the subject. Go to office hours, really helpful. Doesn't make many jokes, but when he does they're hilarious! Ends lectures early.

Incredibly knowledgable and helpful. Ignore the negative comments. A great professor who sincerely wants his students to do well. Very very organized class and notifies you immediately of any changes to the course. Do the hw problems, read the book if class wasn't clear enough, and actually study for quizzes and you'll do fine!

Dr. Lewis great professor at Santa Clara. He really knows his stuff (literally wrote the book on it). It's definitely a challenging class, but if you have questions, go to office hours. Force yourself to learn the little details. Grading style is a little different from most (no curve) but it is still possible to do well.

He puts up all these resources on camino to study from: chapter questions, study guides, practice midterms, etc. Don't be fooled. His tests will be nothing like the homework, quizzes, or any practice material. Maybe try going to his office hours and specifically asking for a question like one that will be on the test.

his lecturing speed is like bullet train and it's quite hard to cope up too fast. Exams are challenging and you'll barely have time to finish. Quite a hard grader too&does not curve the class I would NOTrecommend him. But, if you have to take him because he's the only guy teaching the class, be prepared to spend extra time studying for this class

Lewis really knows what he is talking about and is very open to questions to help you understand. The only warning I have is that he curves down. If you get an A grade but enough other people did also, you'll get a A- or B+. It's hard to predict your own grade because you're being graded based on how others in the class performed.

This guy must have changed a LOT since some of these comments have been made. One of the friendliest guys I know. He knows the stuff well since he wrote a textbook on it. If you're willing to actually learn the material, the class isn't that hard at all.

I took this class years ago. His ego was a little over-inflated. We had our disagreements, but (unlike other profs) my grade was unaffected. He is probably more helpful if you are willing be be belittled, but my helpfulness score here is based on assuming you aren't into tat sort of thing.

Pretty difficult teacher, but is also an awful grader. The class average was a 69% at the end of the quarter and I got an 82.5%... You'd think that's pretty good but he didn't curve it and I ended up with a B-. So the average grade was a D+.

He's all right. The class is hard and his lecturing style doesn't make it much easier, but he seemed pretty approachable and willing to help. It seems that he just thinks the students know more than we actually do, so a lot of the lecture just is beyond the level you can follow.

I got absolutely screwed on my senior design project by this guy...lost a full grade letter becase my photo wasnt on the COEN website. Thats ok, Im comfortable with my 2.998 final GPA...Im sure that A to B demotion didnt affect that .002 points I needed for a 3.0. It was a mere 6 years ago...Ill probably get over it soon.
